Top 5 Games We Can't Wait to Play in 2019

By Sean Carey, 1 month ago
We are just over halfway through 2019, and we've had some cracking games released for the Xbox One. The second half of the year is looking even better with the likes of Xbox exclusive Gears 5 and other big-name titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ready to take centre stage on the console. There are plenty more games being released in the upcoming months, and here are our top five games we cant wait to get our hands-on in the second half of the year.

Doom Eternal – November 22nd

Doom is back again this year with all of its fast-paced, ultra-violent, first-person shooter goodness. Doom Eternal, a direct sequel to the 2016 reboot, Doom, finds the Doom Slayer picking up where things finished in the previous game. The Doom Slayer has been teleported to an unknown location while Earth suffers at the hands of a demonic invasion. We can expect more gore, more furious, shot-gunning action and of course more ripping and tearing with the Doom Slayer's famous chainsaw — the standard affair for a Doom game. And this is why we can't wait to play it. Id Software did a fantastic job with the reboot, and we're expecting more of the same from Doom Eternal.

Doom Eternal is currently playable at Quakecon. We will be sure to update you with any news coming out of the conference as soon as we get it.

Gears 5 - September 10th

Gears 5 is an absolute must on this list and for any Xbox fan. The Gears of War series is iconic and has played a considerable role in the success of the Xbox since its first outing on the Xbox 360 back in 2006. Continuing from Gears 4, the story this time around focuses on Kait Diaz, her past and that strange necklace she received at the game's conclusion — we are desperate to find out what it means!

Multiplayer is of course back again in Gears 5 — with its Arcade, King of the Hill and the competitive Escalation games modes. Gears of War has always had a great multiplayer, with plenty of players getting stuck into the action. It will be interesting to see what changes are made this time around. And if you fancy a hand at the Gears 5 multiplayer, all Gold subscribers can jump into the Gears 5 Technical Test starting today at 10 am PDT / 1 pm EDT / 6 pm BST.

The Church in the Darkness - August 2nd

Developed by Paranoid Productions, The Church in the Darkness is a top-down stealth/infiltration game. Set in the 1970s, tucked away deep in the South American jungle lies a secretive cult called the Collective Justice Mission. Your nephew is with the cult, and you have taken it upon yourself to rescue him from the Jonestown-like sect.

However, what makes The Church in the Darkness unique is that with each playthrough, the narrative and the characters change making for a different experience each time you play. Sometimes the cult might be well-intentioned and at other times murderous and deceptive. The Church in the Darkness has us here at TA very excited, and we're looking forward to playing through this one multiple times.

For some more info on The Church in the Darkness, have a read of Mark Delaney's excellent interview with the game's designer and director, Richard Rouse III. Included in the interview is an exclusive achievement preview where Rouse talks about five of the 48 achievements featured in the game.

The Lord of the Rings Adventure Card Game - August 8th

We aren't short on quality when it comes to theCard Game genre. With the likes of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, Magic Duels and the (truly supreme) UNO, could one more card game really hurt?

We here at TA don't think so, as we're looking forward to The Lord of The Rings Adventure Card Game, developed by Fantasy Flight Interactive.

Much like other card games, you'll be able to build up your own 30-card deck, this time with heroes and characters from Tolkien's fantasy world. You'll battle Uruks, spiders and orcs while journeying to the deepest, darkest parts of Middle-earth in a narrative driven Lord of the Rings Experience — and who doesn't want more Lord of the Rings in their lives?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - October 25th

This list wouldn't be complete if it didn't feature Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The latest instalment in the franchise topped the recent pre-order chart for games shown at E3.
The game is heading back to its Modern Warfare roots, and what made the Call of Duty Series the pioneer in the First-Person Shooter genre — gone are the days of the jetpacks and wall-running.

Infinity Ward has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will see the return of a single-player campaign (as well as fan favourites Captain Price and John 'Soap' McTavish), which will take us on an action-packed journey throughout cities in Europe and parts of the Middle East. We can also expect varying levels that will incorporate stealth, intense close-quarter fights, and long-range sniper missions. Some of these missions, however, have been reported as controversial, with a level that involves graphic violence while playing as a child who must kill Russian soldiers to survive.

We are also getting the classic Call of Duty multiplayer back and the popular Spec Ops game mode from both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will also be returning this time around. Unfortunately, the Zombies game mode has been axed this year, along with Season Passes.

So there you have it; our top five games that we're looking forward to in the second half of 2019. That's of course not everything we can expect, with the highly anticipated Borderlands 3 and yearly staples such as FIFA 20 also still to come. Let us know what you are looking forward to in the poll below, and be sure to chat about your choices in the comments.
