New Gears 5 Trailers Show the New Escape Mode and Map Editor

By Sean Carey, 1 month ago
In a couple of new videos released on the Gears of War YouTube channel, we've been given a few more details and some more gameplay footage of the new Escape mode and Map Builder coming to Gears 5.

The new co-op mode titled 'Escape' allows three players to take on and destroy an enemy Swarm Hive, from the inside out. After planting a Venom bomb, players will have to fight their way out from the hive while keeping ahead of the Venom Bomb's toxic cloud.

There are three different playable characters to choose from, each with their own unique abilities. Keegan fills in as a Support role with a Resupply ability, Lahni is a Scout class and has a special Electroblade and Mac who takes the role of a Tank and has the ability to use a Barrier to defend his squadmates.

Players can also take refuge in special safe rooms located around hives. There they can resupply with guns, ammo and health — similar to that of Left 4 Dead's safe rooms.

After each successful destruction of a hive, players are awarded skill cards that can be used to upgrade their abilities and provide further customisation options.

The new Map Builder ties into Escape mode and allows players to create their very own custom Hive maps. Hives can be built from a variety of different pre-designed room tiles which can be placed together to create a map size of your choice. Enemy types, the number of enemies, resources and ammo and even the speed and intensity of the Venom cloud can all be customised and placed exactly where you want them, to create a truly unique Escape experience.

Once completed, the map can be either played locally or online with friends and can also be shared for the rest of the Gears 5 community to play and rate.

Gears 5 releases on September 10th and will be coming to Xbox Games Pass.
