Rod Fergusson, Studio Head of The Coalition, posted an image of the skiff in Gears 5 being driven through a frozen landscape.
Fans were quick to question the possibility of open-world exploration, asking whether the possible presence of a compass on the screen meant players would have the ability to freeroam, to which Fergusson replied "Interesting..." Fergusson continued to be present throughout the replies. Previous trailers for the game have shown the skiff being driven across frozen tundras and rivers, and when some fans questioned whether the skiff would be driven freely or through scripted scenes, Fergusson confirmed "freely". Furthermore, another fan mentioned that they "wouldn't be surprised" if the skiff handling was "similar to the bike mission in Gears 4", to which Fergusson simply replied "I would".
The trailers for Gears 5 strongly imply that Kait Diaz's journey to uncover the truth is no small part of the game. She sets off into the unknown, against countless enemies, to understand what's happening to her; all of which sounds entirely fitting for open-world exploration. Nothing's been 100% confirmed yet, but Gears 5 is looking very exciting.
