The power of Xbox Game Pass continues to show in this week's Xbox Gameplay Chart: Blair Witch debuted onto the service and hit the top 20, while its competitors are nowhere to be seen.

As we discussed in our Blair Witch preview, the premise and execution of the game alone, as well as that famous IP, makes it understandable that Bloober Team's new project would hit the top 40. But given the patterns we have seen with Xbox Game Pass in the last few months it's undeniable that its release straight into the service for no additional cost has massively improved its standing in terms of Xbox players' gaming time. This is even more notable considering that another horror game of similar scope, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, is nowhere to be seen in the top 40.

Ultimately as the top 10 games have shown for months, the player base is very much interested in playing content that doesn't cost them anything upfront. This explains the continued success of free-to-play shooter Vigor, as well as the resurgence of interest in Gears of War 4 following its inclusion in Games with Gold. Continuing to release content for older games, rather than moving on to new projects, is also proving beneficial; the much maligned Star Wars Battlefront II has climbed its way back up the top 40 thanks to a dogged determination to repair last year's damage with decent content updates. Other free-to-play games are continuing to perform well too thanks to recent events, such as the re-entry of Brawlhalla.

Finally, Assassin's Creed Odyssey returns to the chart after breaking its streak of remaining in the chart since launch. It's a strange anomaly compared to virtually every other single-player focused release in the last year, but for whatever reason Odyssey's gigantic compelling world and well-received DLC expansions have kept the interest going.

We're expecting a fair amount of movement this week as Gears 5 enters the fray from Friday — though only for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Where do you think Gears 5 will land among the pile during it's pre-release period?
