Despite some teething problems when it came to online connectivity, progression and Gears 5's achievements not tracking or being awarded, Microsoft has declared that Gears 5 had "the biggest launch week of any Xbox Game Studios title this generation" with over three million players.
The reason for Gears 5's success is largely down to the game's inclusion in Xbox Game Pass, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers being able to play the game four days early. On PC, Gears 5 almost tripled the number of players compared to Gears 4, making the game the biggest ever launch for Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox Game Studio's best ever debut on Steam.
Overall, Microsoft said that the number of Gears 5 players "easily doubled" the first week's performance of Gears 4 and was also the most-played Xbox Games Studios title in its first week since Halo 4 back in 2012. However, it should be noted that this figure includes the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate early access period.
This is echoed by our own Xbox Gameplay Chart, where our data shows Gears 5 jumping into second place on the table, although it didn't quite manage to take the top spot from Fortnite.
