Borderlands 2

4.6 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

Best Xbox Game Pass Games

Gearbox's middle entry in the looter-shooter franchise was always going to a be popular addition to the Xbox Game Pass stable, given that it turned up just a few months before the hotly anticipated Borderlands 3 was due to release. Even without that extra hype, Borderlands 2 is generally considered to be a pretty definitive looter-shooter, taking the style and humour of the first game and featuring Handsome Jack, generally considered to be one of the best villains of the previous generation. With an abundance of content available in the game and its DLCs, most recommend diving into Borderlands 2 in co-op — it's best with a friend or two.

The Xbox One version of Borderlands 2 can also be purchased as part of The Handsome Collection, bundled with the Pre-Sequel:

Forza Horizon 4

Gamescom screens

The third Horizon game was such a knockout that many of us doubted Playground could match their own high bar with a sequel, but they managed it. Forza Horizon 4's abundant roster of vehicles feel as awesome to drive as ever, but the sequel adds a more thoughtful progression system across a year long Festival, introducing seasonal changes to the northern British map. It's a stunningly detailed world full of stuff to do, both in single player and online multiplayer. It's the one racing game you should try out even if its not normally your genre of choice — especially if you like a beautiful view.

Batman: Arkham City

4.6 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

Batman

While Rocksteady's Arkham Asylum was an impressive take on the classic superhero, Batman: Arkham City really allowed the developers to open up — quite literally, as the action left the confines of the Asylum for the brooding expanse of Gotham itself. The centrepiece is still the combat, making Batman's moveset thrilling to execute, yet leaving the player very vulnerable if they don't use those moves wisely. A gripping story and a colourful cast of villains make this one of the most essential comic book adaptations in video game history.

If you want the full Rocksteady trilogy, the remastered Xbox One versions of Asylum and City are bundled with Arkham Knight, the series finale, in the Arkham Collection:

Rise of the Tomb Raider

16/06 4

The TrueAchievements community sure do like a good middle section to a gaming trilogy, and the rebooted Tomb Raider series is no different. Rise of the Tomb Raider takes the dynamic Hollywood action and gritty undertones of their initial run with Lara Croft and injects a little more of the original series' Indiana Jones-esque wonder back into the proceedings, with a dramatically chilly setting and a mysterious ancient city forgotten beneath the ice. Lara continues to grow as a character in interesting ways, with her personality flaws exposed as often as her confidence and competence.

Fallout 4

Despite its classic Bethesda quirks — glitchy NPCs, an abundance of fun side quests propping up a weak central story and some underwhelming combat — Fallout 4 still won the hearts and minds of folks here on TrueAchievements and in the wider gaming industry. Somehow the alternate-timeline concept still holds enough interest to keep players returning to the post-apocalypse; this time seasoned with some Blade Runner style replicant intrigue. A new settlement building mechanic allowed players to create their own social spaces with the NPCs of the land, a step that must surely have inspired the team that would eventually produce MMO follow-up Fallout 76.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

4.5 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

Batman Arkham Asylum

Like most corners of geekdom, TrueAchievements has a lot of love to give to the caped crusader — so it's not much of a surprise to see Batman: Arkham Asylum make the list so close to Rocksteady's second outing. While Asylum isn't open-world, the world it does sport is dripping with dark detail. Mark Hamill's Joker reallly steals the show here too, as does the combo-based fighting that would become a hallmark of brand; not to mention one that other developers would try and emulate in the years to come.

If you want the full Rocksteady trilogy, the remastered Xbox One versions of Asylum and City are bundled with Arkham Knight, the series finale, in the Arkham Collection:

Resident Evil 4

4.5 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

The Best Games on Xbox Game Pass

While there will always be a raging debate about the best Resident Evil game in the series, the fourth entry comes out on top for a lot of people, especially those that grew up with it. Resident Evil 4 is perhaps the biggest gameplay evolution for the series aside from VII's first-person perspective, and the 4's changes are largely considered more acceptable. From the fourth entry, players controlled Leon from an over-shoulder perspective and had free movement when aiming a gun, allowing for more granular approaches to defeating an oncoming enemy. The story and atmosphere were near-universally praised too. With a 96 on Metacritic for its original PS2 incarnation, Resident Evil 4 is still considered to be one of the best games ever made.

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

4.5 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

Best Games on Xbox Game Pass

A surprising success among years of middling Xbox exclusive offerings, Ori and the Blind Forest is a reasonably challenging metroidvania with a big heart, beautiful visuals and a dream-like soundtrack. If you're the sensitive sort, just be prepared to get teary-eyed pretty much straight away. Ori's success led to the release of a Definitive Edition (linked below) and it is one of the only Nintendo Switch games with Xbox achievements.

Fallout 3

4.5 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

The Best Games on Xbox Game Pass

There were plenty of concerns among Fallout's die-hard fans that Bethesda Game Studios' first-person take on their beloved franchise would somehow ruin it. Some of those fans argue that this is precisely what happened, but for console gamers and newcomers to the series Fallout 3 was a revelation; an immersve, stark and unusual post-apocalypse constantly flitting from the sombre and grim to the wacky and ridiculous. The Capital Wasteland is beautiful in its own battered way, and players were enthralled by the idea that you could go anywhere and always find a fascinating story, above or below the ground.

Batman: Arkham Knight

4.5 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

Batman AK Catwoman DLC

We might as well round out the trilogy — TA clearly loves Batman, and so the third entry in Rocksteady's franchise also makes the cut. It continues the make the most of the series' phenomenal sense of atmosphere and pitch-perfect approach to the Caped Crusader's combat style, but also adds a few new fan favourites, including the Batmobile itself. Gotham is bigger than ever — five times bigger in fact — and though the city evacuation storyline feels like a thin cover for the fact that the city was too big to populate, nevertheless Gotham feels alive. It's a fitting conclusion, and four years later fans are still eagerly anticipating Rocksteady's next move.

Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection

4.45 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

Soldier Hold Up On Tanker

Remember the simpler times, when an HD remaster was something to get excited about? Admittedly these two PS2 classics are starting to show their age, but we'll be damned if they aren't still uniquely excellent Kojima products that no one has quite managed to emulate since — least of all Konami. The second and third MGS entries are stealth puzzle games as much as they are shooters, with high, often fixed angle viewpoints providing stage after stage of tricky boss fights and often hilarious stealth solutions to complex problems. The story batters players with overindulgence and nonsense in a way that still, somehow, feels charming — and it's nice to hear David Hayter's Snake again. Whether you were a fan back in the day or are intrigued to see why everyone's so fussed about Death Stranding, you should definitely check this out. Oh, and Peace Walker is a pretty decent spin-off too, tying more directly into the events of The Phantom Pain — it's in this bundle, but it comes with its own achievement list.

Gears of War 3

4.44 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

The Best Games on Xbox Game Pass

The Gears franchise has continued on successfully since the original trilogy, but the emotional third entry, tying off a few of the original story threads, will always hold a firm place in the hearts of fans. Gears 3 mostly iterated on the gameplay successes of the first and second games, without evolving too much — which is certainly no bad thing. Big innovations this time around included Beast Mode where players could play as the Horde, and the very welcome inclusion of 4-player co-op. Let's stop pretending though — the real reason people hold Gears 3 close to their hearts is because of what happens to [REDACTED] in the story campaign.

Meanwhile, deep beneath the surface, a fearsome new threat is infecting the planet from within. With survivors scattered and civilization in ruins, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race.

Mass Effect

Mass Effect

Playing Mass Effect now feels the same as trying to return to the grandfather of the modern western RPG, Baldur's Gate — appropriately enough, also made by BioWare. Both have such loving attention to detail to their characters that it's impossible not to recommend them, and yet thanks to their age, they both suffer horribly in comparison to the modern gaming experience. Mass Effect's combat, traversal, quest navigation and general performance are pretty terrible, certainly compared to the vast improvements in Mass Effect 2. Yet Mass Effect planted the seeds of a grand space opera and arguably was the franchise entry most able to deliver on its emotional and philosophical promises. The universe that Mass Effect sets up is simply beautiful in its balance, its complexity and its politics, and for those who miss BioWare's second golden age in the late 00s, a return to the first Mass Effect is still worthwhile — even though you'll spend far, far too long in elevators.

Slay the Spire

4.41 out of 5 from the TrueAchievements community

The Best Games on Xbox Game Pass

Perhaps the only truly surprising entry on this list, at least to those who have never heard of it, Slay the Spire has a growing following simply for being a very accomplished and original deck-building strategy game. Players craft a complex and layered deck as they ascend the titular spire, battling monsters and creatures as they go. It's supremely elegant, especially for an entirely new card concept, and it has won the hearts of critics who know just how hard that is to pull off. A fresh, clean and accessible interface and structure helps things too. If you've ever thought about trying out a digital card game, Slay the Spire is an easy pick to get you started.

Tomb Raider - Definitive Edition

Tomb Raider DE Launch Trailer Screen

Just peeking in to our list is the first entry in Eidos and Crystal Dynamics' reboot of the classic Tomb Raider franchise, delivering a totally overhauled look and tone for the traditionally fairly farcical Lara of the 90s and 00s. Here players found a vulnerable but powerful heroine emerging over the course of the narrative as a true adventurer. That grittiniess is let down a little by a weak supporting class and ultimately far too many superheroic stunts to make Lara seem particularly grounded, and also a questionable amount of leery violence in the player character's death animations. Still, it was the beginning of a pretty good thing for a newly revamped series, one that would peak with Rise and ebb a little with Shadow. Here's hoping that the team find even more fresh territory for the character in the future.
