The Outer Worlds' Day One Patch is as Big as the Game

By Heidi Nicholas,
The Outer Worlds is just a week away from release, and Obsidian have announced the official times the game will be coming out in each region, along with the size of its day one patch.

The Outer Worlds, a wacky Western-style RPG set in space, is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The Microsoft Store gives the game's approximate size is 36.78 GB. Obsidian say that the title update coming on launch day will be around 38GB to download for Xbox players who purchase physical copies of the game; around the same size as the actual game. It's around 18 GB for PS4 owners of the physical game, whilst for those who purchase it digitally on either platform, the patch will be included in the game's pre-load. The Outer Worlds is generally scheduled for midnight release in most regions. Check out Obsidian's map below to see exact times:

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!

This almost proves that the 4k was an after thought. They must have had no intention of putting it in until too late in development.

It's one hell of a week with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, The Outer Worlds, Legend Of Heroes Cold Steel III, Dusk Diver, Spirit Hunter: NG and Destiny Connect all in the same week and I still have no idea what I want to play first. o.0

If you have game pass you are able to install the game already. Just FYI. Can’t wait to play it!

I really really hope this goes live dead on midnight. My body is ready. I hope we can also download the patch prior to launch.

I doubt this. Most games are built with textures. models and other assets too a high resolution, polygon count, bitrate etc. They then build the assets into a game to fit the target specification. The day one patch is likely the full-game being downloaded with the additions of the patch compiled into a higher version number than the one burnt to disk.

4K enhancements and the like are about optimisation, which (in the digital age) is a constant process and can often go past launch.

Figure it's more likely they've struggled a bit with optimising graphics and such across multiple platforms for the same deadline.

It'll be released on the 25th. That's not what I'd call "just a week away".

Id like to look at it as "Lets make the game first and nail down everything then send it to the disc makers and while we are creating inventory, we can get 4k honed" Glass half empty vs glass half full, we'll never know why content creators do what they do.

I'm still skeptical about this game. I'll definitely wait for some of you beta testers to give it a shot before I decide whether to dive in or not.
    I'm predicting some broken achievements.
