Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Ditches Loot Boxes in Favour of a Battle Pass System

By Sean Carey,
Activision has confirmed that loot boxes will not be present in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Instead, the game will have a battle pass system in the same vein as the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends. New game modes and maps introduced after launch will also be made available to players, for free.

In a blog post, Activision has detailed how the new Battle Pass will work. Players will be able to see what items the Battle Pass contains before making a purchase at the start of a season. Much like Fortnite's pass system, there will be both a free Battle Pass Stream and a premium Battle Pass Stream, so even if you decide not to buy the battle pass for a season, you can still unlock some content.

Activision has stressed that "All functional content that has an impact on game balance, such as base weapons and attachments, can be unlocked simply by playing the game." COD Points (Call of Duty's premium currency) can also be earned through the Battle Pass.

The battle pass system will not be immediately available when the game is released on the 25th; instead, it will launch later this year.
