Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Ditches Loot Boxes in Favour of a Battle Pass System

By Sean Carey,
Activision has confirmed that loot boxes will not be present in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Instead, the game will have a battle pass system in the same vein as the likes of Fortnite and Apex Legends. New game modes and maps introduced after launch will also be made available to players, for free.

In a blog post, Activision has detailed how the new Battle Pass will work. Players will be able to see what items the Battle Pass contains before making a purchase at the start of a season. Much like Fortnite's pass system, there will be both a free Battle Pass Stream and a premium Battle Pass Stream, so even if you decide not to buy the battle pass for a season, you can still unlock some content.

Activision has stressed that "All functional content that has an impact on game balance, such as base weapons and attachments, can be unlocked simply by playing the game." COD Points (Call of Duty's premium currency) can also be earned through the Battle Pass.

The battle pass system will not be immediately available when the game is released on the 25th; instead, it will launch later this year.

Hopefully they won't pull what Black Ops 4 did. Still wish Survival mode was on Xbox at launch though, it was a niche game mode I played a lot of in MW3.

Battle Pass Systems are just as bad, mega grinds and shit useless content. What if we don't want to pay an additional say $10 and the amount that you earn back really isn't worth it.

I somehow doubt the 'integrity' of this system will hold, but seems better than lootboxes I guess

Can anyone explain to me how a battle pass system works? I've never played fortnite so I've got no idea how this would work in a CoD game.

Unsure how it would work in a CoD game, but they have it in Smite as well.
You start with 0 points, and you earn Battle Pass points for every match you complete. A set intervals (say every 100 points for example), you'll receive some content for reaching that milestone.
A free track will give you rewards at 100 points, 300 points, 500 points etc, whereas the premium track with give you rewards at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 etc.

I think battlepass systems are bad too. Bring back skins for kills/headshots.

Why they selling a battlepass if everything is suppose to be free ? :// okay.

I can use Apex Legends as an Example for this but they mostly work the way ManiacMetalhead above talked about.

So in Apex you have a "Season" with a Battlepass tied to it. every time you play a match or finish a daily/weelky/event challenge you earn XP and every time you hit the require threshold you rank up, earning Loot tied to that tier. in Apex [ and Fortnite and probably the case for others ] this also includes some of the game's currency and if you play to max rank you basically earn enough of it to just buy the next Season Pass for Free.

TLDR though Battlepasses are basically designed to Drip feed you Rewards to encourage you to remain dedicated to a game for an extended duration. Most of the ones i've seen are to either avoid Loot Box Systems or are such a harsh grind that you have to live in that specific game to attain its Max Rank.

They should have it in from the start so the reviews include the battle pass system but that would probably shave a few points off and they obviously know it. I also expect lootboxes or the equivalent to make an appearance at some stage.

Still on the fence about day 1 but I will probably get it because there is a lack of online shooters or anything else CoD like on console, bit of a mess really they have us by the short and curlys. I would much rather have bought Doom but alas..

Definitely a step in the right direction. All functional content being unlock-able just by playing is the real headline here. If they break they word on that at anytime gamers will revolt and I think they’re starting to understand that. Could give a shit less how they want to monetize skins.

This is exactly the mindset I miss from early- and mid-2000s gaming (and before obviously). Can you imagine how incredible gaming would be if we had the attitudes and creativity of way-back-when paired with the hardware and services (eg., Live and Game Pass) of today?

Gonna wait and see how this plays out. If by Christmas the game isn't a mtx mess then I'll try to pick it up at a discount.

Battle passes seem like they do the same thing as a loot box would, just framed differently
