Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Requires an Activision Account For Cross-Play

By Sam Quirke,
If you're planning on getting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare this week, be prepared to sign in or register for an Activision Call of Duty account. Even though the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Achievements list will likely put the focus on the game's single player campaign, Activision are still proudly advertising the fact that you can compete against players on any platform when you jump into multiplayer. To make this work though, Activision have had to make their in-house player accounts a mandatory requirement.

This has been known since the Beta, but for those of you who have held out for the final release we wanted to let you know about this requirement and an easy way to get it sorted ahead of time. According to Activision's FAQ, if you have an existing Activision ID from the Beta you will be able to log in with these details directly when you jump into the game. Otherwise you will have to go through a quick sign-up process when you get in, using an email address to link your account.

You will also have to pick a username — but Activision are opting for the same method as Discord and more recently Xbox to handle duplicates. You can pick any name you want (within the usual guidelines of good manners, of course) and you final Activision ID will include a string of numbers to differentiate you from anyone else using the same name. So, we can probably expect to see a lot of Captain Prices on the battlefield. As you might expect, there's an opportunity to accidentally end up on a marketing list during this process — so make sure to untick or tick the box as desired. For the purposes of Modern Warfare at least, your "Activision ID" and your in-game "Display Name" are one and the same.

Although these instructions are specifically for Modern Warfare, we would imagine that Activision are aiming to maintain the same ID system for future Call of Duty outings. If you ever want to change your display name, you will be able to do so in-game at some point after launch. But if you're desperate to change your display name from participation in the Beta, you can do so by logging in to the official Call of Duty site, heading to the Basic Info in your Account and changing the Activision ID.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on Friday October 25th on Xbox One, and will require an exhausting 137 GB download, which you can already get a start on.
