"A Wonderful Addition to the Droid Family": BD-1 in Fallen Order

By Heidi Nicholas,
R2-D2, C-3PO, BB-8: Despite the limitations of a character with no human features or voice, Star Wars has never failed to get some of its most memorable and best personalities from its cast of Droids. Could BD-1 be the next iconic droid? The team behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order release a video about the making of BD-1, Cal's robotic companion:

"In STAR WARS, droids are more than just robots. They have personality and heart; they're full-blown characters." This seems to be the biggest drive behind the making of BD-1. The developers say they faced the problem about how to get his personality across. "The secret of BD-1 is solving the problem of how to get something...robotic to sound like a being," says Nick Laviers, Audio Director, speaking in the trailer. "He doesn't have a face where he can express emotions, it's mostly in the head movements and the antenna", says Animator Laure Retif. These antenna seem to be one of the most effective ways of expressing BD-1's personality; Retif likens him to a dog, and indeed, BD-1 is a lot smaller than some of the iconic droids, and in the trailer alone it's clear to see how much his antenna reflect his thoughts. He's also shown to hop on and off Cal's back like a little backpack, and the team say this idea was pulled from how Luke carried Yoda around while training on Dagobah. It seems like BD-1 will also be helpful in noting places of interest in the game, as Lead Concept Artist Jordan Lamarre-Wan talks about how he can lead Cal over to look at a particular wall. Star Wars: Fallen Order is available for pre-order, and doing so will net players a BD-1 skin. STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order releases in just over three weeks, on November 15th.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
