You Can Now Vote For the Golden Joysticks Game of the Year

By Heidi Nicholas,
You can now place your vote for "Ultimate Game of the Year" in the Golden Joysticks awards. The voting went live today, and runs until next week.

The nominees are as follows:

The Outer Worlds

One of the most anticipated titles this year, The Outer Worlds launched today to widespread acclaim. It's a sci-fi, space-western RPG from the team behind Fallout: New Vegas, itself a highly popular game. Elements of New Vegas can be felt throughout The Outer Worlds, which takes players across the Halcyon system. The premise is that you are woken up from hibernation, aboard a transport ship destined for the frontier of space. Only, the transport ship was abandoned, and you've woken up 70 years later than planned. The world is now run by all-powerful, corrupt companies, which own every inch of the system. Our review of The Outer Worlds gave it 4.5/5, and labelled it the best RPG from Obsidian Entertainment yet.

Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds is not The Outer Worlds. Although it is set in space. It's an open-world, action adventure mystery. The player is a new recruit to the Outer Wilds Ventures, an organisation tasked with exploring and understanding the secrets of the solar system. The world doesn't wait for you, either; leave a location for too long, and it may disappear into the sand, or disintegrate entirely.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is another popular entry in the Battle Royale genre. Players take on the role of a particular Legend and team up, scavenging for weapons and fighting to the death in an arena which gradually shrinks. Apex Legends recently had the launch of its third season, which brought a new map, and new Legend Crypto.

Gears 5

Gears 5 was another much-anticipated release. Continuing the Gears story, Gears 5's campaign mainly focuses on Kait Diaz. The world is in chaos and the Swarm is more prevalent than ever, but Kait Diaz has her own mission. She sets out on a quest to understand the strange things happening to her.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare was also highly anticipated, and released today alongside The Outer Worlds. Modern Warfare is a complete re imagining, and includes a new campaign, multiplayer, and Spec Ops. The game's been receiving favourable reviews: check out our review roundup to see how it's been doing.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a stealth action-adventure game from the team behind the Dark Souls series. It's set in 1500s Japan, and is about a disgraced warrior rescued from death and given a second chance at honour. His task is to protect a young lord from a variety of enemies, including the Ashina clan.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2, the remake of its predecessor, is a stealth, survival-horror game. Raccoon City has been overrun by a virus, turning its inhabitants into monsters. Claire and Leon, two of the few remaining survivors, become entangled with the conspiracy behind the outbreak of the virus as they fight to survive.

Control

Control is a mind-bending third person shooter. It revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control, which is involved with supernatural threats. Jesse Faden is unexpectedly driven into the role of the new Director of the Bureau, which is overrun by otherworldly beings called the Hiss. Control follows Jesse's quest to restore Control.

The non-Xbox game nominees are as follows:

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium is an adventure RPG, in which the player is a detective solving murders. There's 24 skills to help the player be any sort of detective they like from corrupt and violent to the hero of the city.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is set in the continent of Fodlan, ruled by the Church of Seiros. The player must teach the students of one of the three houses; The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer. War is on the way, and players are in charge of their students' progress, directing their academic lives and leading them through battles.

Telling Lies

Telling Lies is a thriller game based on investigation. It revolves around the lives of four people, linked together through a harrowing incident. The player has access to a stolen NSA database with recordings of these people's lives, and must search through the data to find out the truth.

Untitled Goose Game

Untitled Goose Game needs no introduction. However, if you'd like one; Goose Game is a game about a lovely peaceful village which is disrupted by the invasions of a cantankerous goose, determined to ruin everybody's day. It's been widely praised, toted as a lot of fun, and it's coming to consoles.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
