Modern Warfare Patch Fixes Spec Ops Issues, Liberation Achievement Unobtainable

By Sam Quirke,
CORRECTION: It appears that the Liberation achievement in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare achievements list is currently unobtainable, and won't be available until the required content is released. Infinity Ward refer to an "achievement" fix in their patch notes when players "complete all missions", but this is confusing matters, as the Missions required for Liberation simply aren't in the game yet. Infinity Ward have yet to clarify which missions are required to unlock this achievement, or when they will be released.

Call of Duty: Modern WarfareLiberationThe Liberation achievement in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare worth 586 pointsComplete all Special Ops missions.

Infinity Ward has released some short patch notes for this and previous small updates, clarifying exactly what has changed. This latest patch fixes third-person footstep sounds, which shouldn't be audible while the Dead Silence Field Upgrade is in use. The patch also addresses some remaining stability issues to stop those reported crashes "on all platforms", though we found that Xbox One X was getting a rougher end of the deal on that score. Hill rotations and locations have been improved for Hardpoint multiplayer maps Arklov Peak, Azhir Cave, Hackney Yard, Rammaza and St. Petrograd. A previous update also added Cyber Attack to the Quick Play filter, as well as options for 10v10 team deathmatch and 10v10 domination.

The Liberation achievement is the only achievement in the Call of Duty Modern Warfare achievement list that requires multiplayer — specifically, co-op — to complete. Initially it was thought that this might be why Infinity Ward decided to separate the achievement out into its own title update. Now it appears that they may have done so because they knew the achievement would be unobtainable at launch, with no definitive answer as to when it will become available.

The lack of Special Ops Missions hasn't gone unnoticed beyond the achievement community, either. Redditors have pointed to marketing material that implies that multiple Missions will be available in the game, with no mention that the initial launch would only feature one. Infinity Ward have tried to calm frustrations with an update in the subreddit, but a vague reference to more missions being made available "soon" has, if anything, made the conversation angrier. We've reached out for clarification. Thanks to Luuc and NoHeroes94 for assistance with the clarification.

I'm very confused by this. I didn't think this was broken, and thought that the Special Ops missions weren't even released yet? The 4 launch operations are, but these reportedly are separate.

Spec Ops missions, according to multiple sources pre-release, are similar to CODs of old with 3-star requirements, with the operations being tough co-op challenges. The achievement only specifies "missions".

I've also seen a few people who've re-done the operations post-patch and still been rewarded with nothing.

Infinity Ward either got their description wrong, and meant to finish all Operations, or have gotten something mixed up. I always thought Spec Op missions were post-launch releases. Idk!

    @NoHeroes94, yes there is matchmaking.

I think the achievement for now should be flagged as unobtainable.
As some people already tried playing all the Operations plus Safe Guard after the latest patch, the achievement is still not popping.
    CIutch Corey said:
Still doesn't unlock. We did all 4 Operations + Safeguard right at launch & again now after this update, but no achievement. I believe they meant you can now unlock the in game "achievement" for unlocking the Operator Zane.

This character "challenge" was previously bugged until today.

They also would have probably said "achievement/trophy" in their patch notes when it is actually obtainable, as the PS4 trophy can't be obtained either currently.
The ingame challenge was indeed bugged, Infinity Ward probably refers to that issue as 'achievement fix' in their patch notes.
Infinity Ward should clarify the real requirements for this achievement, as it's very misleading.
This achievement is probably meant to unlock after future content comes available, at least that is my thought about it.

From the Activision Blog (clearly stating Operations and Missions are separate and available on all platforms, to end that annoying debate).
    https://blog.activision.com/call-of-duty/2019-10/Feature-All...

Operations (not stated in achievement description)
As you infil into one of the many war-torn zones within Special Ops, you and your team have full latitude on how to accomplish your Operations. This Special Ops game mode is a 4 player matchmade activity centered around interconnected experiences that take the form of objectives, each culminating in the removal or destruction of a key logistical aspect of the Al-Qatala army.

Missions (what the achievement description states)
Complementing the multi-stage Operations, and also available across all platforms, are additional Missions, which can be played solo or with up to four players. Whereas Operations give you the widest breadth of strategic and tactical choice, Missions are a more curated experience where your proficiency with specific weapons, killstreaks, and other tools will be tested. These Missions are extremely replayable, and you’re able to achieve a 1, 2, or 3-star ranking based on your performance. Naturally, there will be an “Infinity Ward time” that you can attempt to beat!"

No idea why they've said they've fixed it, there is nothing to fix, the content just isn't there yet.

Still confused. So the summary of it is that we can't get this achievement until they release new missions?

Yeah when they said Spec Ops was back thats what I thought SP with a star rating and that we were only going to be missing the Co-Op Survival for a year.......so yeah surprised there is no Single Player Spec Ops like of old..................

Yeah I thought we were getting Single Player Spec Ops Missions and only thing missing was Survival Co_op....so I thought and thought these missions would be available at launch

Because they said they’d be available at launch. It’s blatant misleading/false advertising.

Basically, yes. None are available yet.

Spec Ops is split into "Operations" and "Missions". The former is available, but not tied to achievements (4 player co-op). The latter isn't available, and you're required to finish them all for the DLC achievement (solo or co-op star challenges like older Spec Ops). No missions have been released on launch, and no date has been provided on when they will. Unless you WANT to do Operations for fun, don't do it expecting to get the achievement retroactively with a patch as their Reddit post stated.

microsoft should be all over this. Devs should NOT be allowed to release achievements which are part of incomplete content they had not released. where does the abuse of achievements end with activision?

It was stupid for IW to name them so similarly. They could have easily renamed Operations something else entirely to avoid the obvious confusion. Or maybe their intent was to confuse...

The way I'm seeing it (I haven't played the game yet so correct me if I'm wrong), is that Operations is similar to Extinction mode from Ghosts. It's a map and you have an objective to complete then you move on to the next one until you extract. But instead of fighting aliens you are fighting humans.

Missions are like the Spec Ops from MW2 and MW3. That is what the achievement is for and apparently they haven't been released yet.

So are you saying that DLC achievement lists should only be announced the day they're released? Technically all DLC is incomplete content until it's released, which is what this achievement is for... DLC. Should they not have announced this DLC yet? Perhaps, perhaps not. It's the wording of the description that's confusing, but I see nothing wrong with releasing DLC achievements ahead of the DLC release.

If that's the case, releasing DLC achievements early, it's more than Activision who is guilty. The problem with IW/Acti is that they weren't clear on what the Spec Ops DLC was. But when has a dev/publisher been clear about achievements?

Thinking I might actually get a CoD game somewhat close to release for once, but seeing what the game looks like has me otherwise disinterested. It looks like Call of Battlefield to me. I just couldn't get into Battlefield and any CoD after Black Ops 2 really. Only recently started going back to play some of the newer CoD games because of zombies. That's about the only thing that brings me back to CoD now.

Haven't touched MP yet. The story is very decent but its incredibly short. Without skipping cutscenes I got every missable achievement in a 5-hour run. With Veteran, it'll be <10 hour completion.

The characters are interesting and well acted. The game looks ridiculously stunning. However, there are problems with flow and structure as it feels like a "special hits" with a bunch of cool set pieces tied together. It's not very nuanced. I found that with COD 4 that lots of missions had twists and turns where you felt you'd gone on a journey each time; in MW (2019) it's a case of THIS IS A STEALTH MISSION - THIS IS A SNIPER MISSION - THIS IS A RUN AND GUN MISSION. Once a mission commits to an idea, that's the mission and it feels a bit regimented. The game is good, but doesn't reach the heights of the original MW trilogy at all.

    7-8/10 for me.

Yeah, seems to me now that the campaigns are not really developed too much, or they're just not what they used to be. Part of that is nostalgia for me and the CoD that I played growing up, especially the MP. The CoD of old days looks more and more like a thing of the past to me. That's all fine to me, it just leaves me disinterested into what CoD devs are putting out today. It seems like the Black Ops line is the only part of CoD that will have me interested in the future for the sake of zombies.
