The next Outlast Game, The Outlast Trials, Will Be a Multiplayer Horror-Fest

By Sam Quirke,
We knew something related to the Outlast series was on the way thanks to some Twitter teasing, but we had thought it was going to be the third game, potentially rounding out a narrative trilogy. We thought wrong. Red Barrels have announced The Outlast Trials, a single- or multi-player spin-off set in the same Outlast universe – but set back in the Cold War when the nefarious experiments began.

The Outlast Trials release date

Red Barrels' co-founder David Chateauneuf, said that the team are hard at work creating "a new experience" for series fans, and the press release says that the game is "not a direct sequel", just in the same universe. Single players will still be able to experience the terror for themselves, but this time they will also be able to co-operate with up to three others. "We've done our proof of concept," says Chateauneuf, "it is time to focus on content creation, variety... and gore."

It's a fascinating turn of events for the series, and we're intrigued to see how this co-operative gameplay will work in a game that famously racks up the tension thanks to the player's isolation and total lack of weaponry. Will it be puzzle-based? Will there be some A Way Out style element of dual play, with one player creating distractions while others move about? Or will this multiplayer venture bring a more Left 4 Dead vibe into the mix?

We simply don't know. Apart from the title, the fact that there is multiplayer involved and a creepy image, Red Barrels simply aren't ready to divulge any more information. We don't even know which platforms the game is coming to, let alone when it will get a release date. We'll share more details as soon as we discover them.
