A Plague Tale 2 Could be in Development for 2022

By Heidi Nicholas,
A Plague Tale: Innocence is a grim stealth game set in medieval France. The country's overrun with rats, plague, and the forces of the Inquisition. It was met with very favourable reviews when it released in May earlier this year, and it looks like we might be seeing its successor just a few years from now, in 2022, as a sequel is reportedly in development.

A Plague Tale comes from Asobo Studios, the team behind Microsoft Flight Simulator. It features Amicia and Hugo De Rune. Amicia, the elder sister, is the player character; her and her little brother are orphans attempting to survive the strange happenings in their country. Rats swarm across the land and people everywhere are succumbing to a deadly disease, whilst the forces of the Inquisition loom over it all. On top of all this, Hugo has a strange illness himself, and it's Amicia's task to protect him from all the dangers of their world, and especially the soldiers of the Inquisition, who seem particularly interested in hunting for him. The rumour of a sequel to the game first came from French site Xbox Squad, which claims to have confirmation that a sequel, Plague Tale 2, is in development. They say they have this information from a "verified source...directly from a head of Focus" and that despite the fact that A Plague Tale was originally intended to be a standalone, its success has induced the publishers to adapt their plans and produce a sequel.

The site further says that the game is set to release in 2022, with an official reveal planned for next year. Xbox Squad claim to have contact Focus Home Interactive, who apparently "confirmed the presented information" and that "the publisher validated that the development had begun". Eurogamer, too, reached out to Focus Home Interactive, who did not explicitly deny the rumour. "Focus Home Interactive and Asobo are very proud of the critical and public reception of A Plague Tale: Innocence, and the sales", the statement reads. "We're delighted to have received a solid number of awards and nominations, including for Best Narrative at the Game Awards next week. We want to pursue our efforts to make sure the game gets even more attention from players and we will thus keep promoting that title as it deserves." They continue to say that they "announced last year we are partnering with Asobo for a future project but never confirmed if it was a sequel to A Plague Tale or not - and will give more details on that title when the right time comes." It's important to note that whilst they haven't denied a sequel, they haven't confirmed one, either. It's possible that this future project might be totally unrelated. All we know is that we'll hear news on this title "when the right time comes". But if Xbox Squad's sources are correct, and this is A Plague Tale 2, then we might be hearing news about it sometime next year.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
