It's Thursday, which means it's time to welcome in a new set of games that will be free to play for Xbox Live Gold members this weekend thanks to Xbox's regular Free Play Days event. This weekend, it's Fallout 76, DayZ and SOULCALIBUR VI that will be available for free. As per usual the free period is expected to be from today until Monday.

Fallout 76

Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is in many ways Bethesda's albatross; though it has a dedicated fan base and things have improved a lot, many mainstream gamers remember the disastrous launch and arguably poorly conceived concept all too well. Still, having played a little of it myself, I'd say it was worth a go for free just to experience its peculiarities. There is a good game in here somewhere. Bear in mind a couple of things though – the download is going to set you back 52.9GB, and if you leave the starting Vault you will pop and achievement; there's no way you will complete the list in a weekend, so fair warning to the 100%ers among you.

Bethesda Game Studios, the creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, welcome you to Fallout 76, the online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, experience the largest world ever created in Fallout. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats.

DayZ

DayZ

One of the early open-world survival hits on PC started life as a mod for ARMA 2, and quickly span off into a standalone experience back in 2013. In 2019 the game finally made it to consoles – to little fanfare. Critics point to the game's relative slowness as a factor in it not gaining huge appeal on console, as well as its bugginess – but other praise its tense and tough survival experience. It might be worth a go for free, especially for those into the genre – it'll be interesting to see if this weekend can revitalise the console community, as it's really a game best enjoyed with a dedicated party. It'll set you back 10.9GB to install. We recently flagged the entire achievement list as discontinued as no players seemed able to unlock them, but we've seen a few reports this month that they are available once againl; just be wary, because a flagging player base will mean that those servers could disappear again at some point in the future.

The post-soviet country of Chernarus is struck by an unknown virus, turning the majority population into frenzied infected. Fighting over resources has bred a hostile mentality among survivors, driving what’s left of humanity to collapse. You are one of the few immune to the virus - how far will you go to survive?

SOULCALIBUR VI

SOULCALIBUR VI

The sixth entry in the veteran sword-play fighter only got light coverage in the mainstream press in terms of reviews, but most of it was positive – it has an 84 on Xbox One on Metacritic. Our own reviewer Kevin gave it a 4.5/5, and joined a general chorus praising the game's accessibility in a genre notorious for eschewing beginners in favour of the fighting game elite. It certainly doesn't hurt that everyone's favourite bath-tub connoisseur and monster hunter Geralt of Rivia was this iteration's main IP tie-in. Certainly worth a go for free, though it's unlikely the casual to moderate achievement hunter would be able to polish off the achievement list before the end of the free period – it's estimated to be a 35-40 hour completion. The download is 11.6GB.

SOULCALIBUR VI

Bring more than your fists to the fight! SOULCALIBUR VI represents the latest entry in the premier weapons-based, head-to-head fighting series. The heroic 3D battles transpire in a beautiful and fluid world, with eye-popping graphics and visual appeal. Featuring all-new battle mechanics and characters, SOULCALIBUR VI marks a new era of the historic franchise. Welcome back to the stage of history!

That's it for this weekend's Free Play Days. I personally might dive into SOULCALIBUR VI, just to get my Witcher fix. What do you make of them?
