Players Have Spotted a RE3 Easter Egg in the New Resident Evil 2 Demo

By Heidi Nicholas,
The Resident Evil 2 demo which popped up on the Xbox Store yesterday seemed to be the same as the one released in January of this year; except players have now spotted a key difference in the form of an RE3 Easter Egg. If you go outside the Raccoon City Police Department and head to the graveyard, you can hear Nemesis roaring "Stars". This was spotted by YouTuber Suguru Misato, who uploaded a 45 second video in which you can briefly hear the voice of the RE3 antagonist.

It's not exactly obvious — it took us a few listens — and given the general zombie ruckus, it's understandable if you missed it. Even in the game, it's often hard to tell whether you're hearing an actual threat, or just Leon himself, with his worryingly zombie-like breathing, so it's easy to miss this. Capcom are popping up in the spotlight left right and centre, with the official announcement of a Resident Evil 3 remake happening only this week. The remake is planned for April 3rd next year, and so the demo and the inclusion of Nemesis is perfectly timed to ramp up the Resident Evil hype. Capcom also drew attention for the inclusion of a new achievement in Resident Evil 2, which again provided a link between that RE2 and RE3, which takes place over much of the same time and space.

The announcement of Resident Evil 3 for next year adds to the increasingly hefty list of titles we can expect to see. In fact, its April release date is setting it up for some pretty hefty competition, as that's the same month as when CD Projekt Red's highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 will release. 2019's had some big releases, but there's also been a lot of delays, and whilst that's left the latter end of this year a little thin, it does mean that 2020 gamers are going to be pretty spoilt for choice. You can have a look at what's been pushed back and what we've yet to see by checking out our roundup of all the 2019 no-shows here.

The extent of this Easter Egg is yet to be made clear. Capcom seem determined to drop links between RE2 and RE3 recently, so perhaps we'll be seeing some more developments later. Either way, given the huge success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, we can hope for a lot from the RE3 remake next year.

I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
