The Witcher 3 and Pillars of Eternity Available Now in Xbox Game Pass

By Sam Quirke,
If the winter months have put you in the mood for some dark fantasy or just a long RPG to relax into, then it's a good time to get on Xbox Game Pass. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Pillars of Eternity have both been added to the list of Xbox Game Pass games on console today, representing two to three hundred hours of complex storytelling and fantastical gameplay.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The game that brought Cyberpunk 2077 studio CD Projekt RED into the industry mainstream, The Witcher 3 follows troubled monster hunter Geralt of Rivia on his quest to find an old flame and his long-lost daughter in the aftermath of a devastating war – as well as thwart the plans of a interdimensional harbinger of death. Despite such pressing matters, The Witcher 3 is particularly well loved for its many distractions from following the main quest, setting a new benchmark for complex, intelligent side quest writing compared to its third-person RPG contemporaries. The base game alone is worth a download, but don't sleep on the opportunity to pick up the game's two excellent DLCs in the current Xbox One Countdown sale.

The game is Xbox One X Enhanced, in 4K and with HDR. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt achievement list will take some work to complete – the difficulty based achievements will all unlock if you complete the game once on its hardest difficulty, but that's a tricky proposition – you could always start a new game plus to carry over some high-level weapons, but your enemies will level up too. Regardless of approach it's considered to be 120-150 hours to the completion by our community. We highly recommend RavenWraithe's The Witcher 3 achievement walkthrough to help you out. It's a 37.77GB download.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a story-driven, next-generation open world role-playing game set in a visually stunning fantasy universe full of meaningful choices and impactful consequences. In The Witcher, you play as a professional monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia, tasked with finding a child of prophecy in a vast open world rich with merchant cities, pirate islands, dangerous mountain passes, and forgotten caverns to explore.

Pillars of Eternity

Pillars of Eternity Xbox Game Pass

Pillars of Eternity is partly famous in the industry for being among the first crowd-funded gaming projects to receive a wild amount of donation money. Obsidian managed to deliver on their concept of a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. Pillars of Eternity has no relation to Dungeons and Dragons though – Obsidian created their own world and story here, with the player cast as a Watcher able to see past lives and communicate with lost souls. A useful skill in a world plagued by a bizarre phenomenon in which children are born without souls. The gameplay is traditional isometric fare and features real-time yet pausable combat, allowing players to carefully adjust strategy on the fly. Unlike many RPGs, the player only gets experience from quest completions rather than killing enemies, allowing players to explore non-violent approaches to problems. The console edition of the game was packed in with the White March DLC released separately on PC.

The Pillars of Eternity achievements list shouldn't take quite as long as The Witcher – a mere 80-100 hours rather than 120 – and the list will make the most of those non-violent means of progression: There's an achievement for killing fewer than 175 creatures and NPCs. Community member rcborg1985 has written a decent and thorough Pillars of Eternity achievement walkthrough if you want to make sure your path through the game is efficient. It's 14.26 GB to download.
