They say they know "what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world", and that the delay is needed to work on their "original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content".

To our fans,

At Crystal Dynamics our ambition has always been to deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience. In order to achieve that goal, we have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Marvel’s Avengers to September 4, 2020.

As fans ourselves, it’s an honor and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world. When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel’s Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.

The worldwide teams working on Marvel’s Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you’ve shown us. We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can’t wait to show you more. We apologize for the delay. We’re confident it will be worth the wait.
It's true that they're planning quite a bit of future content for the game, if their recent comments are anything to go by. We recently published a roundup of everything we know so far about Marvel's Avengers. In it, we discussed how Square Enix said that the "story will continue for years after the game launches, filled with new biomes, Super Villains, gameplay modes, and Heroes for players to master", so it seems they're planning to reinforce the game with frequent updates for some time after its release. There's definitely more than enough characters from the Marvel universe which they could create their own version of for the game. Or perhaps Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have decided to hold back and make use of the advanced capabilities of the next generation of consoles; Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Sony's PS5. We'll keep you updated when we learn more.

Marvel's Avengers is now set to release on September 4th 2020.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
