TrueAchievements community stats of the decade

By Sam Quirke,
As we continue to celebrate our Games of the Decade, including the opportunity to cast your own votes, we realised that it wouldn't be a TrueAchievements event without a healthy dose of stats. With that in mind, here are some of the big figures from TA's decade of gaming – the games you played the most, the achievements you unlocked, and more.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, older games dominate our most played games of the decade – games that have had plenty of time to appear in sales or Games with Gold. Halo: Reach has a comfortable lead with 302,000 of you having unlocked at least one achievement. The latest releases in the Top 20 are still five years old – Halo 5 and Fallout 4. Microsoft would likely be pleased to see that dedicated Xbox players favour a fair number of their own titles, from the Halo series to Gears to Fable III.

Developers and Publishers of the Decade – Average Players Per Game

Rocket League 4

There's two ways to look at TA player numbers for publishers and developers - the combined total of players on each of their games, and the average amount of players per game. We've gone with the latter here. The former gives a bit of bias to the companies that can't stop producing games. For example, Ubisoft Montreal would come out on top with a combined player count of 2.6 million players, but then they released 34 games in 10 years. Similarly, Microsoft Studios might have grabbed a ridiculous 11 million players when combining the counts on each of their games – but thanks to variants and casual products they published an equally ridiculous 363 titles in the period.

With that in mind, here are the top developers and publishers by average TA player count – the studios that managed to retain the biggest audience across their catalogues. Remember, this only includes TA players that popped an achievement.

Position Developer Games Released 2010-2019 Average Player Count
1 Treyarch 4 200662
2 Psyonix 1 180562
3 Wanako 1 176282
4 Bungie 4 175635
5 343 Industries 5 168380
6 Irrational Games 1 167731
7 Epic Games 3 160799
8 Team Bondi 1 147031
9 Bethesda Game Studios 5 139958
10 Playground Games 5 136676
Position Publisher Games Published 2010-2019 Average Player Count
1 Psyonix 1 180562
2 Rockstar 10 124569
3 Roblox Corporation 1 111319
4 Behaviour Interactive 2 88277
5 ORiGO Games 1 84803
6 Bulkhead Interactive 2 84436
7 Studio MDHR 1 75443
8 Blizzard Entertainment 4 74290
9 Monomi Park 1 72794
10 Other Ocean Interactive 1 67148
Treyarch comes out on top on the developer side because of its veteran Call of Duty: Black Ops series, but is closely followed by Psyonix, the creators of Rocket League – who come out on top in the publisher ranking. While Rocket League is undoubtedly a polished and deserving game, the lists show that retaining players isn't just about producing a quality product – it also reflects the changing gaming landscape, where publishing just one title and keeping the content coming can net you enough of a player count to content with the big studios and publishers. Price point also matters as much as quality, hence the high ranking for Wanako who developed Doritos Crash Course and high rankings for the smaller teams behind Games with Gold titles So Many Me, Slime Rancher and Pneuma. None of these are bad games, far from it, but none would likely make these lists without the power of Xbox's cost-efficient subscription model. Despite the attractiveness of free games and easy gamerscore, Rockstar still prove that quality premium products have a place in the 2020s and beyond, ranking second by average player count per game in our top 10 publishers. It's also an impressive position for Studio MDHR, responsible for Cuphead – which has yet to feature in one of Xbox's subscription services.

Here are the achievements TA members unlocked the most – with a note that had we included apps, Netflix's achievement for watching three episodes in a row would have come in third in the Xbox One list. You bingers.
