Modern Warfare's Warzone battle royale could arrive in early March

By Heidi Nicholas,
A battle royale mode for Modern Warfare has been rumoured pretty much since the game launched; a data mine as early as November last year revealed a possible map, and last week, the battle royale mode was teased in an official cutscene. Despite all these rumours and leaks there hadn't really been any clear idea of when the mode might come out, but reports are now rolling in that it could finally be on its way, arriving in early March.

These reports come from VGC, who say they have the info from development sources. The sources gave early March as the likely release period, with VGC themselves believing March 10th to be the most probable date, given that Infinity Ward tend to release updates on Tuesdays.

When the cinematic teaser released last week, players noticed a new option under game types which had been greyed out and labelled "CLASSIFIED". The same sources say that the battle royale mode, Warzone, will unlock through this menu, and that the battle royale will also be available as a free standalone game, with players having the option to pay to "upgrade" to the full version of the game. VGC say Activision hope that Warzone will pull more players into the game, by virtue of being a more accessible place to start. Given the increasing popularity of battle royales, it's a fair idea to think that some players might prefer to be drawn into COD this way. While the battle royale mode may not release until early March, VGC's sources say marketing plans will start this week, so it shouldn't be long before we get more information on Warzone.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
