Grand Theft Auto IV (PC) is returning to Steam. However, the game is making a comeback with a mandatory upgrade to the Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, which removes multiplayer mode, leaderboards and critically, the Games for Windows Live service — which could mean GTA 4's entire achievement list becomes discontinued/unobtainable.
The game was delisted from Steam last month with Rockstar telling USGamer, "Grand Theft Auto 4 was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game."
Now GTA 4 is making a comeback to the digital storefront without Games for Windows Live. An update over on the game's Steam page reads, "Starting 03/19/2020, Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition will replace both Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City wherever it is currently digitally available. As a result of this update, the following services will no longer be available in Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, Games for Windows Live, Multiplayer mode and Leaderboards"
Current Steam owners will need to update their current game to the Complete Edition replacing their already installed version. Those who own the game physically and have not previously activated the product key via Games for Windows Live can use the key to activate and update their game to the Complete Edition.
Rockstar has also warned that new activations from players trying to install current versions of GTA 4 could be disrupted until the new version is available.
Although all current game save files will be compatible with the new edition, it's entirely possible that along with the removal of Games for Windows Live, achievements may no longer unlock with the game when the update goes live on March 19. As a precaution, it's probably worth working through the game now before that date to grab any achievements you haven't yet unlocked.
We have reached out to Rockstar for clarification on what exactly will happen to the achievement list.
As with the removal of Multiplayer, it's more than likely that 10 achievements will become discontinued:
For several of these achievements, it's probably worth setting up a boosting session here on TA. To do so, follow this link to view all active/upcoming sessions and create your own.
Several radio stations will also become temporarily unavailable with the new update, including RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM, and Vice City FM.
The Complete Edition update rolls out on March 19.
