Embracer is paying a total of $150 million upfront with another $375 million to be paid out over three years depending on certain milestones being met. The US-based Saber has around 600 employees across six offices. There is said to be no restructuring or cost-saving programmes planned.

The acquisition makes Saber Interactive Embracer Group's fifth operating group and will remain as a standalone company under the Embracer umbrella. Saber's co-founders and owners, Matthew Karch and Andrey Iones, are set to jointly become Embracer Group's second-largest shareholder.

Lars Wingefors, founder and CEO of Embracer Group, said "Saber has been on our radar for a very long time because of their deep history of consistently high-quality work. Their ambitious moves towards self-funding projects in recent years have been particularly impressive, especially with World War Z, which sold more than three million units."

Embracer now owns several big-named development studios, including the likes of Tarsier Studios (Little Nightmares), Milestone srl (Ride and MXGP), Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance) and Volition (Saints Row).

Embracer Group has also acquired the French Let's Sing series developer, Voxler under its Koch Media banner. Dr Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Koch Media, said "We are delighted to welcome the team from Voxler to the family. After a long relationship in publishing across selected Koch territories, the acquisition is a natural step to further extend and expand our product portfolio in specialized segments of the gaming and entertainment market.."
