CD Projekt Red are now the second biggest game devs in Europe By Heidi Nicholas, 24 Feb 2020 CommentsCD Projekt Red are now Europe's second biggest video game company. The studio's market valuation has now soared over $8 billion, placing CDPR not too far behind Europe's number one game devs — Ubisoft. As spotted on Reddit, Ubisoft's own valuation lands somewhere between $8.5-9.5 billion, meaning CDPR aren't too far off being the biggest video game company in Europe. The most likely reason for CDPR's success is its biggest title, The Witcher 3. Already a fan-favourite and highly praised just for its own merits, sales of the game rocketed even further following the Netflix adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books. Just this year, the game broke its own record on Steam with more players than it had had at launch. Over 100,000 gamers picked it up thanks to a renewed interest in the franchise, most likely feeding from Netflix's show and a flood of new interest in the books. Cyberpunk 2077 is likely to boost the company further. The huge success of The Witcher 3 has attracted even more excited scrutiny to CDPR's upcoming sci-fi RPG, which the devs have just confirmed will have an Xbox Series X upgrade available at no additional cost. Nor is interest in Geralt's adventures likely to die down any time soon, with Season 2 of Netflix's show on the horizon. All in all, CDPR are heading into 2020 in a good position. Their success with The Witcher 3 is further buoyed by their new agreement with the series author, which seems to mark an end to the tumultuous nature of their relationship. Ubisoft may still be the top video game company in Europe, but it seems CDPR aren't too far behind.Industry News Written by Heidi NicholasHey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
