Cyberpunk 2077 will have an Xbox Series X upgrade, at no additional cost

By Sam Quirke,
The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 have taken to Twitter to confirm that the intensely hyped upcoming game will at some point get an Xbox Series X upgrade – and when it does arrive, it'll be free for owners of the game on Xbox One.

This news comes off the back of Xbox and Phil Spencer's earlier reveal of many Xbox Series X specs as well as the philosophy behind the project – one aspect of which is the idea that players can play the same game across generations. Spencer's announcement stated that in-house Xbox exclusives will definitely be cross-compatible between the Series X and the One, using a "Smart Delivery" system to give players an optimised edition. However, Spencer also implied that they couldn't control what third-party publishers decide to do – meaning that some may choose to release a separate full-price Series X edition of their products.

Cyberpunk 2077 has gotten out ahead of the potential conversation here with a clear intention to let players play Cyberpunk 2077 on either platform and get an optimised experience. It's also a firmer confirmation that the team are indeed working on enhancements for a next-gen edition. The developers haven't stated when this will be available, but many have speculated that creating an Xbox Series X upgrade in time for the console's launch may have been part of the reason for the Cyberpunk 2077 delayed release date.
