Gears 5 Xbox Series X enhancements could be in the works

By Sam Quirke,
The Coalition may be working on a Gears 5 Xbox Series X upgrade. Phil Spencer has tweeted out a vague photo of his visit to the studio and said the "enhancements" that the team is working on make Gears look better than ever.

Spencer doesn't mention Xbox Series X by name in the tease, and we'd have to assume the low quality and poor framing of the image is intentional to add to the mystery. It certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see Microsoft's latest big exclusive get a significant visual overhaul ahead of the launch of the Xbox Series X, to bolster up the initial line-up of titles.

If true, Gears 5 would join the likes of Halo Infinite, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, Watch Dogs Legion and Outriders – all games confirmed to be utilising the power of the next generation in some way.

Of course, this generation is going to be especially murky in terms of defining a next-gen game. Xbox has already declared that there will be no Xbox Series X exclusives at launch, or even close to it – all games on Xbox Series X will work on Xbox One. We absolutely don't expect to see a new Ultimate Edition or Remaster of Gears 5, as that would fly in the face of recent statements from Xbox declaring that players won't have to pay for a game twice to get an upgraded experience.

All in all, it's a vague tweet, but one we think is deliberately targeted to stoke up hype for an inevitable Gears 5 Xbox Series X upgrade. Phil Spencer revealed some Xbox Series X specs at the beginning of last week.

Six months out from launch, the game is still hanging in on the Xbox Gameplay Chart as players chase that elusive Gears 5 achievements list completion. The Seriously 5.0 Chapter 1 achievement is still sitting at a hefty 31.30 TA ratio.
