The Nether Update is now available in Minecraft beta

By Sean Carey,
The Bedrock Nether Update for Minecraft is now available to those currently signed up for the Minecraft beta on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Android. The Nether Update adds a few new biomes, mobs, blocks and introduces a bunch of gameplay changes and quality of life improvements.

Minecraft

Three new biomes have been added with the Nether Update beta. Warped Forests are full of weird and wonderful new vegetations. Trees are made up of fungi, and Shroomlights light up the forest, while Warped nylium covers the floor. You'll also find a dark blue fog covering the forest, and you might bump into an Endermen or two. According to the Bedrock Update beta post, the Warped Forests are the least hostile place in the Nether, but it is still a slightly odd area. Next up we have Crimson Forests. These forests are similar to Warped Forests with Crimson fungi making up the trees, while Crimson Nylium makes up the cave floor. Vines grow from the cave ceilings and from the fungi canopies above. This area is much more dangerous with new mobs roaming the area such as Hoglins and Piglins. Finally, we have Soulsand Valleys. These valleys feature mainly open space and are made up of soul sand and soul soil. Ash falls from the air, and you'll encounter plenty of Skeletons.

Piglins are a new mob that you'll encounter thanks to the beta update. These half-pig enemies will attack on sight, unless you "dress appropriately" then these creatures might allow you to barter with them for different goods. They love gold and are easily distracted by it. Piglins sometimes hunt Hoglins and will fight in groups. You'll also come across Zombified Piglins which normal Piglins don't like, apparently. Baby Piglins don't pose too much of a threat and aren't as dangerous.

Hoglins are big and aggressive, and you'll find them tucked away in Crimson Forests in the Nether. They will attack you on sight so bear that in mind before approaching. Hoglins can also be bred by feeding them some crimson fungi, although it's dangerous. Baby Hoglins pose no threat and only pretend to be the tough guy.

A bunch of new blocks have been added. These include:
  • Crimson Stems and Warped Stems – Wood-like materials
  • Basalt blocks – Can be placed in any direction and are similar too pillars
  • Crimson Nylium and Warped Nylium – New ground blocks
  • Nether Sprouts, Crimson Roots and Warped roots – New vegetation
  • Crimson and Warped – Fungi blocks which can be grown using Bonemeal
  • Warped Wart blocks – Decorative
  • Weeping Vines – Which are climbable
  • Shroomlights – A new light source
  • Soul Soil – Fire on Soul Soil burns with a blue flame and can be used to craft soul torches
  • Target Block – This is an experimental block that once hit with an arrow, fires up a redstone signal. The closer to the middle of the block you hit, the bigger the signal.
A whole raft of gameplay changes and quality of life improvements have been added with this beta update. Check out the Nether Update beta patch notes for the full list. If you want to join the beta, follow this link for detailed instructions on how to sign up.
