Red Dead Online has new Showdown Mode variations and new Role XP bonuses

By Heidi Nicholas,
Rockstar has announced a new Featured Series for Red Dead Online, with new Showdown Mode variations, and say more are on the way during the next few weeks.

Red Dead Online Showdown mode

Rockstar says that the variations are made up of "capture style modes where you start out with only a handful of Throwing Knives and a smattering of Shotgun pick-ups". They include the following:

  • Overrun: on the Manor and Sisika maps
  • Spoils of War: on the Fort Mercer and Orchard maps
  • Plunder: on the Saint Denis and Saint Denis Plantation maps
  • Up in Smoke: on the Blackwater and Lanik Electrical maps
There'll be more variations of Showdown mode arriving throughout the next few weeks, including Last Stand and Name Your Weapon. Last Stand is a variation of the free-for-all. You'll start out with just one life, with nothing but the weapon you spawn next to. This will be on the Annesburg Mine, Armadillo and Cemetry maps. Name Your Weapon will be on the Fort Mercer, Heartlands Oil Field and Tall Trees maps. This mode rewards players with higher points for more skilful kills. Now, Rockstar are adding in an "explosive upgrade", with weapons such as the Volcanic Pistol and Dynamite sticks featuring in new loadouts.

Meanwhile, this week's update in Red Dead Online sees more XP boosts, the continuation of Rank Rewards, and the return of a selection of limited-time items to the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Catalogue. There's 50% extra Role XP to be had on all Trader Resupply, Trader Sell and Trader Free Roam Events, and double XP for all A Land of Opportunities Missions, as well as Free Roam Missions and Events. Meanwhile, the Carbow Double Bandolier, the Chambliss Corset, the Hitched Skirt, the Porter Jacket, the Charro Jacket, the Concho Pants, and the Prieto Poncho have all returned to the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Catalogue.

Rockstar say there'll be more Showdown variations to come, and we'll keep you updated.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
