Xbox Gameplay Chart: Doom Eternal's first week on the chart

By Heidi Nicholas,
There's a lot of activity in this week's Xbox Gameplay Chart. Although the top five is locked in a stalemate with Modern Warfare still at no.1 and Fortnite at no.2, further down there's the first appearance of Doom Eternal following its release, as well as several other new entries appearing this week to reshuffle the ranks.

Here is the top 40 Xbox Gameplay Chart for the week ending 22 March 2020.

Sea of Thieves has sailed up the ranks, moving seven places up from no. 21 to no. 14. The game just celebrated its second anniversary, coinciding with free play days over the weekend, a new anniversary event, a celebratory weapon, and the continuance of the latest Tall Tale, which had itself been released just a week or so before. Ori and the Will of the Wisps, meanwhile, made its debut in the chart last week, coming in at no. 15. It's slid down a little this week, coming in at no. 19. The game's still having some end game achievement issues, which might also be affecting its status.

Just below, Doom Eternal makes its first appearance at no. 21. The game was just released last week, and as one of the most anticipated titles of this year, it's likely we'll see it continuing in the charts for some time. If you're still undecided on whether to get it, check out our Doom Eternal review roundup. Doom popularity seems to be at a high all-round; Doom 2016 has appeared at no. 40 on the chart. Assassin's Creed Odyssey, meanwhile, is making a heroic return; it was previously the longest-running single-player title on our Xbox Gameplay Chart. It returned last week at no. 40, and has shot up the ranks this week to no. 29. Ubisoft had made the game free to play over the weekend, which likely helped its popularity boost.

Our five new entries, including Doom Eternal and Doom (2016), are Phantasy Star Online 2, which just had its open beta begin, Sonic Generations, and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Falling off the chart this week are Brawlhalla, Warframe, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, the beta for Bleeding Edge, and Halo 5: Guardians.

It's an uncertain time right now, and so looking ahead, it's hard to say with certainty what releases will definitely go ahead and which titles might arrive to challenge our Xbox Gameplay Chart. However, this week we can expectthe release of Bleeding Edge, as well as a new DLC for Borderlands 3, so it's likely we'll see some reshuffling in the charts next week — especially since the Bleeding Edge beta made its debut in the chart last week. You can check out our first thoughts on Bleeding Edge while we wait for its release tomorrow.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
