Gamescom won't be postponed, but may take place as a digital event instead By Heidi Nicholas, 01 Apr 2020 CommentsThe organisers of Gamescom have confirmed that the event won't be postponed, but that it might take place as a digital event instead. For now, they're focusing on "significantly expanding" their "existing digital formats."Their announcement reads that although the event is still five months away, the organisers have already reached certain decisions because of the necessary COVID-19 precautions. As such, "Existing digital formats such as gamescom: Opening Night Live and gamescom now will be significantly expanded and new modules added." The organisers have, meanwhile, "announced that gamescom will definitely take place at least in a digital format from 25 to 29 August. They say it will not be postponed. The same goes for the devcom developer conference (22 to 24 August), which starts off gamescom week." A statement from Felix Falk, the managing director of game — one of the joint organisers of the event — said that "In view of the corona crisis, we are now expanding all digital formats at full speed so that gamescom 2020 can at least take place digitally in any case."They'll reevaluate the situation halfway through May, as to whether the on-site event in Cologne can still go ahead. If so, they'll update attendees with new information as to health precautions. "This has been arranged with the largest exhibitors," the announcement continues, "therefore all gamescom plans are continuing at full speed."Refunds will be issued for paid tickets and to exhibitors if the event is cancelled. The announcement stresses that Gamescom's organisers are fully prepared for a digital event. Oliver Frese, the managing director of Koelnmesse — the second joint organiser — says that "gamescom and Koelnmesse already rank among the digital pioneers in the international trade fair landscape. We therefore also see the current corona crisis as a chance to implement digital event formats even more. gamescom 2020 offers the perfect platform for this." According to Frese, "It goes without saying that preparations are well underway both physically and digitally".Industry News Written by Heidi NicholasHey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
