Resident Evil 3 shipped two million units just five days after it released

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 3 shipped over two million units in just the five days following its release, and that almost half of this was from sales of digital versions of the game.

Resident Evil 3 achievements

Capcom shared the news in a press release, where they add that the original 1999's Resident Evil 3: Nemesis — which the remake is based on — sold a cumulative 3.5 million units. They credit their "digital sales strategy" for the fact that the remake sold over two million units so quickly, since nearly 50% off those sales consisted of digital versions of the game. It's also mentioned that last year's Resident Evil 2 has now shipped over 6.5 million cumulative units.

Resident Evil 3 released just under two weeks ago. The overall tone of the reviews was highly favourable, although many seemed to feel the game didn't quite live up to the hugely successful Resident Evil 2. However, the fact that it surpassed two million units in just five days is proof of the continuing popularity of the Resident Evil games, which Capcom describes as their "flagship game series", and makes the continual rumours about more future remakes seem even more likely. We'll keep you updated if we hear anything. In the meantime, if you're yet to decide on Resident Evil 3, you can check out a review roundup to see what's being said about it here.
