Project xCloud servers will be upgraded with Xbox Series X hardware next year - report

By Sean Carey,
Project xCloud is reportedly getting a considerable upgrade next year. Currently, Microsoft uses Xbox One S hardware in xCloud's servers, but that's soon going to be swapped out for Xbox Series X hardware according to The Verge's Tom Warren.

Warren says that Project xCloud's server blades will be upgraded with Xbox Series X hardware in 2021, but when the new console launches this Holiday, Project xCloud will still be powered using Xbox One S internals. The upgrade means that Project xCloud could run next-gen games, and older games included in the service could see significant performance improvements.

Phil Spencer previously revealed that Project xCloud would be joining Xbox Game Pass later this year. The Xbox boss said, "Later this year our cloud game streaming technology, Project xCloud, will come to Game Pass - so you and your friends can stream and play the games you love together on your devices." Nothing else has been said on the two services combining, but we expect to hear more on this in the coming months.

The latest update to Project xCloud added Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Mortal Kombat X and more games to the Android preview.
