Hazelight announces It Takes Two: dolls, divorce, and a "crazy roller-coaster ride"

By Heidi Nicholas,
Hazelight has now announced its new game: It Takes Two, a co-op action-adventure platformer set to be released in 2021. The game is about a couple going through a divorce, whose minds are transplanted into dolls made by their daughter, and who have to set out on a "wild, unexpected and fantastical journey" to get back their regular, every-day human bodies.

Hazelight's description elaborates: parents May and Cody are going through a divorce, but "through unknown means their minds are transported into two dolls which their daughter, Rose, made to represent them." The game "builds on Hazelight's proven track record of making rich and engaging co-op expressiveness," with founder Josef Fares saying it furthers Hazelight's aim of "pushing the boundary of what is possible in games". Fares says the game excels at "marrying the story and the mechanics".

The video above shows only a few quick glimpses of the game, with screenshots of vastly different backgrounds, so it's quite hard to get a grasp of what this game will look like. However, Fares says "you're almost playing their emotions", and that there's "even levels where we're actually making the mechanic for their emotions... I think, for the players, that's going to feel very new, different and unique, they haven't played anything like this before".

It Takes Two launches for Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2021.
