Xbox Series X rumour suggests a $400 price tag and a $200 Xbox Series S

By Sean Carey,
A new rumour that seems almost too good to be true suggests that the Xbox Series X will be sold for around $400 (approximately £323) and that Lockhart, or the Xbox Series S, is a digital-only console that will be available for half that price.

Xbox Series X pricing

The rumour comes from insider eastmen via the Beyond 3D Forum. Eastmen — who has previously been accurate with Xbox news like this in the past — claims that whatever Project Lockhart is will be "half the price" of the Xbox Series X which Microsoft is reportedly targeting a $400 price point at launch. "Last I heard, it is half the price of the XSX, and last I heard MS was prepared for a $400 XSX" Eastmen's post reads. The insider goes on to say that Microsoft will make up any losses by selling more subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass and taking a higher cut of game sales.

However, eastmen admits that he is unsure of the final price because Microsoft's plans are constantly changing. He also says that if Sony was to reveal the PlayStation 5's price first, Microsoft would likely change their strategy. "I am not sure what the final price will be. I think if Sony is $500/$600 MS may try to go in at $200/$400/$500, but we will see."

Eastmen then goes on to talk about July's Xbox digital event. Eastmen says that Microsoft wants the event to be a "night of mic-drops" and that the company will finally reveal the price of the Xbox Series X.

These rumours should all be taken with a huge pinch of salt. A $400 Series X seems a little farfetched, and a $200 Lockhart or Xbox Series S seems even more outlandish considering Microsoft hasn't announced a second console yet.
