Gears 5 Operation 4 starts next week — new ranked system, characters, maps and more coming By Sean Carey, 08 Jul 2020 CommentsGears 5's next operation has been teased with a new trailer. Operation 4: Brothers In Arms kicks off on July 14th and brings with it some new characters, maps, a revamped ranked system and more. The Coalition has also detailed what changes we can expect for Gears 5 going forward. The short trailer doesn't give away too much, other than the start date and that fan-favourite Dominic Santiago is making a long-awaited comeback to the Gears franchise. Although the trailer is somewhat light on details, The Coalition has touched on some of the new features coming to Gears 5 within Operation 4 and has spoken about Operation 5 over on its website. According to The Coalition, it has rebuilt the Ranked system "to make it more clear and fun". Rewards in Tour of Duty have been reworked and "nearly all content" from the store can be purchased or earned by playing thanks to a new earnable currency. All of these changes will be coming in Operation 4, and the dev team say they will be sharing more details on these features over the next few days. We can also expect new characters and maps in Operation 4, but without hero abilities. The Coalition says that every character in Operation 4 "will not have a corresponding hero ability". The reason behind this choice is so The Coalition could increase the number of characters added with Operation 4. "As with the Carmines, this means PVE fans will have to wait to use these characters in Horde and Escape. Hang in there PvE fans, in Operation 5; players will finally be able to choose the character and ability in any combination they want."The Coalition has also addressed the lack of maps in Gears 5, "We know we haven't delivered enough maps in Gears 5. The good news is maps are coming in Operation 4 and 5. The reality is it won't be until Operation 5 that we can deliver a higher volume of maps."From Operation 5, we can expect not only new characters and maps but the "complete separation of characters and classes", more quality of life improvements and "improved quitter mitigation".
