PES 2021 will launch as a budget "season update" — Konami using Unreal Engine for PES 2022

By Sean Carey,
Konami has announced that there will be no PES 2021 game this year and instead will be releasing a "season update" for eFootball PES 2020 which will be sold at an "affordable price".

Konami says the reason for not releasing a new title into the PES franchise this year is because it's focusing on developing a PES game for next-gen, which will launch in 2021. In a statement over on the Konami website, the company said, "The sheer scale of everything we are aiming to achieve for our next-gen debut has made it necessary to pare back our efforts in other areas of development. As a result, we have made the decision to launch this year's PES as a streamlined offering in the form of a 'season update'." Konami hasn't given any information in regards to price for the season update, other than it will be "affordable".

The next PES title will also be using Unreal Engine instead of Konami's Fox Engine. The game is being built from the ground up for next-gen and will feature "more realistic player models and animations" along with better physics and photorealistic visuals. Konami says that it aims to begin testing its next-gen title in mid-2021 with the game launching later that year.
