No Man's Sky sees 1 million new players thanks to Xbox Game Pass — free update out now

By Sean Carey,
A new update for No Man's Sky has rolled out, and it adds creepy derelict freighters for you to explore and improves the combat experience. Developer Sean Murray released details of what to expect from the update and some interesting information about Xbox Game Pass and player numbers.

According to Murray (via Xbox Wire), No Man's Sky saw over a million new players jump into the game thanks to its inclusion into Xbox Game Pass and its Windows 10 release. The game came to both Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC back in June. "This, together with our cross-play update, meant that we are seeing some of our biggest ever in-game numbers, all playing together regardless of their gaming platform. It is genuinely humbling, nearly two years after first releasing on Xbox One, that there are still so many people interested in exploring our universe," Murray said.

A new update has also been released for No Man's Sky. No Man's Sky: Desolation is a free update that adds abandoned freighters to the game. Players can breach airlocks (in groups or alone) and explore procedurally generated interiors of huge derelict shops. According to Hello Games, each ship has its own unique story that can be pieced together from text logs left behind by the previous crew. Valuable materials and upgrades can be found while exploring these ships, but you're going to have to work for them. Defence systems have been left on, environmental hazards will impede your progress, and hostile aliens will also play a part.

The update also makes some balance changes to weapons and enemies for a "faster, more dynamic combat experience." You can check out exactly what's been changed by heading over to the No Man's Sky website and taking a peek at the full list of patch notes.

No Man's Sky is available to play in Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC now.
