Hood: Outlaws & Legends brings PvPvE medieval multiplayer heists to Xbox Series X in 2021

By Heidi Nicholas,
Hood: Outlaws & Legends is an upcoming medieval action game with "intense PvPvE multiplayer heists", set to launch for Xbox One and Xbox Series X in 2021.

Revealed during the recent State of Play episode, it's in development from Sumo Digital, who say you'll be "competing with rival gangs... in a myth-shrouded and violent medieval world." The Robin Hood influence is clear in the title alone, and in the tagline, "We are all Outlaws… but some of us will become Legends." The official description elaborates on this: "Faced with a merciless, unchecked state, rebels and rogues from every corner battle to claim their place among legends. To win influence with an oppressed people, rival gangs now compete in daring heists to hit the wealthy where it hurts. Folk hero or gold-hungry outlaw, only the best will escape with hard-earned riches. Gather your team of outlaws and attempt to steal treasure from an oppressive government in a dark and violent, medieval world."

Two teams of four players will be competing against each other while trying to avoid the attention of the AI guards. You'll need to "utilise the unique skills and mystical abilities of each character, moving in stealth to steal treasures unseen or dominating through loud and brutal combat. Blood will be spilled. Riches will be stolen. Legends will be reborn."

Game director Andrew Willans detailed the game further on the PlayStation Blog. "Hood is a multiplayer heist game that blends combat, stealth, and strategy. You will assemble a team of Outlaws as you attempt to steal treasures from an oppressive government known as The State in a dark and gritty reimagining of the Robin Hood legend." Willans says your main objective will be to steal a treasure chest from a State stronghold, like in the trailer above, but that "locating and escaping with it will require teamwork and tactics." The devs seem to be going for realism: for instance, that treasure chest will be heavy to carry, and causing noise will attract enemies. Each outlaw will have different skills, such as ranged combat or melee, and Willans says the game will have the classic heist characteristic of "assembling the gang to discuss the plan before cracking the vault and making good on your getaway."

While aiming for realism, Willans also says the game is focused on legend rather than historical accuracy. It's got its own version of Dark Ages Britain, "a time when old world myth and superstition compete with man-made power." It also has its own version of Robin Hood, but while he "does wield the classic longbow that you would expect, both he and other outlaws have some unique skills and abilities not found in the classic tales." Willans says the team "inspiration from popular folklore, but introduced elements of grounded fantasy, which you’ll see in the locations, designs and characters imbued with magic."

Hood: Outlaws & Legends comes to Xbox Series X and Xbox One in 2021, and Willans says there's a deep-dive into the game coming soon.
