Microsoft is "absolutely" planning more Xbox consoles in the future

By Sean Carey,
Although game streaming services are slowly becoming more prevalent with the likes of Xbox Game Pass Cloud Streaming, PS Now, Google Stadia, and several others, Microsoft has confirmed it's still planning to design more consoles after the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S generation.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, (via VGC) Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that Microsoft is still planning on developing new hardware, despite the industry putting a focus on cloud game streaming.

"We're about putting the player at the centre. It's not about the device in the middle anymore," Spencer said. "You see that in every other form of media. My TV is with me wherever I go, my music is with me wherever I go. I'm in control of the experience, and I think gaming is now going through the same transformation, which is why as you say if you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber you can now play your great games on the Xbox console, on PC, or on your Android phone via streaming. One subscription gives you access to your catalogue and your community wherever you go, giving players real choice.

"In terms of future hardware, absolutely, I think we're going to see more console hardware down the road. Just like in video, just like in music, it's not that streaming has cut off device innovation. I think we'll continue to see that, and that's absolutely what we're planning for."

Microsoft recently announced that Xbox Game Pass, which includes Cloud Streaming for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, now has over 15 million subscribers. It's possible we could see Xbox Game Pass, with Cloud Streaming, on more platforms and devices such as TVs in the future. Although this could come alongside new hardware as Microsoft doesn't seem to be giving up on consoles just yet.
