Assassin's Creed Valhalla's latest trailer reveals more story details

By Heidi Nicholas,
Ubisoft's latest Assassin's Creed Valhalla trailer gives us a better look at the game than we've had in a while, with new story and character details and more info on the invasion.

This trailer gives a more in-depth look at the story, characters, and motivation for invading England, as well as info on that hidden blade. First up, we meet Sigurd, who Ubisoft confirms is Eivor's adopted brother. We also learn that Eivor is higher up in Viking society than we'd thought: Eivor's adoptive father is King Styrbjorn of Forberg, and Sigurd is his heir. He's also, it turns out, the reason why the Vikings leave Norway.

Narrative director Darby McDevitt says Eivor was made "as an exemplar of what we felt was a particularly Nordic sensibility – possessed by a deep sense of honour, devoted to family, unflappable in times of strife, unwilling to suffer fools, and possessed of a gallows humour." Eivor is "a fixed character with a consistent personality," but you'll still be able to choose outcomes based on how you think Eivor would react. The trailer gives a look at other characters: we'd already seen King Aelfred of Wessex, but there's also a brief look at the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok: Ivarr, Ubba, and Halfdan, who are mentioned as another powerful faction in England.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

We get a glimpse of assassins and the hidden blade, as McDevitt says Sigurd has just returned from a journey to Constantinople where he met the Hidden Ones, and that learning more about them prompted him to give a wrist blade to Eivor. It's also confirmed that The Order of the Ancients are the Hidden Ones' enemies at the time of Valhalla, and Eivor's story will influence the fate of both factions.

When the development team said earlier this year that Assassin's Creed Valhalla would bring back the option of social stealth, everyone was a bit confused as to how this would work, since Eivor is a burly, heavily-armed Viking, and might stand out just a bit. Ubisoft later clarified that the hood and cloak would have "social stealth value", and some players were mystified once again, as to how just pulling a hood up would help Eivor blend into a crowd of monks or farmers or the like. This latest trailer shows just a glimpse of how this might work, with several shots of brooding faces and hoods and cloaks pulled on. We also see assassination and stealth in play, with Eivor running across a rooftop and killing a guard.

Valhalla

Eivor's tale is made up of "self-contained stories" with a "core emotional story running through" the middle, and just to stress us all out, Eivor will "go through a series of devastating hardships." McDevitt wouldn't comment on multiple endings, but said there are "multiple fascinating pathways" to follow. Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
