Microsoft Flight Simulator's first major world update is available to download now

By Sean Carey,
Microsoft Flight Simulator's first major world update is available to download now. The free update, which focuses primarily on Japan, makes improvements to several of the country's key cities and adds in some new landing challenges.

Patch notes posted over on the Microsoft Flight Simulator website for World Update 1 read, "Japan features upgraded digital elevation mapping across the entire country, high-resolution 3D photogrammetry for six prominent Japanese cities (Sendai, Takamatsu, Tokushima, Tokyo, Utsunomiya and Yokohama), and six exquisitely hand-crafted airports (Hachijojima, Kerama, Kushiro, Nagasaki, Shimojishima, and Suwanosejima)." New traditional-style architecture has been added along with a bunch of custom created landmarks and points of interest. Alongside all the visual changes and improvements, pilots can test their skills in three new landing challenges set at Japanese airports.

It's not all about Japan, though. With this update, three new airports join the already extensive list of places to take off and land from, improvements have been made to 60 airports based on feedback from the community, and over 700 control towers have been added to US airports. As with every update to Microsoft Flight Simulator, the patch notes are pretty extensive. You can view the lot on the Flight Sim website.

To access the new Japan content, you'll first need to download and install Update 1.9.3. Once installed, head over to the Microsoft Flight Simulator Marketplace in-game and download the free Japan Content Bundle.
