The first Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - Zombies details are out now

By Heidi Nicholas,
The Black Ops Cold War developers have now premiered the Zombies trailer, sharing new details on characters, backstory, and more. Check out the trailer included in the video below, interestingly set to the tune of Tainted Love:

Zombies is a four-person co-op mode, and while the devs are emphasising how much Black Ops Cold War - Zombies will revitalise the mode, they also say it pays homage to what came before; for instance, to the signature Nacht der Untoten map. The trailer refers to Die Maschine, the first chapter in the Dark Aether story. Requiem, a response team led by Black Ops' Grigori Weaver, explores a World War II bunker, in opposition to rival Soviet team the Omega Group.

There's a whole lot of info about Zombies to digest, and the team goes into it all in more detail over on the latest news post, with backup from Treyarch Studios, who says, "all the classic Zombies elements are here. Round-based survival, fan-favorite Perks, the Pack-a-Punch machine, Wall Buys, the Mystery Box, and more." Some key features are listed below:

  • Cross-play and cross-gen. The devs say "just like Multiplayer, squads in Zombies can be formed across platforms and generations, marking the first time in franchise history this co-op mode is available via cross-play."
  • Cross-progression: there's unified weapon progression across all Black Ops Cold War, meaning, "wherever you play across multiplayer zombies, your global rank and weapons level stays connected."
  • Battle Pass progression: your time in Zombies will help to progress you through the Battle Pass. Instead of starting with a pistol, Requiem players "can also start the match with their Gunsmith-crafted weapon of choice via loadout support." You'll have a lethal, tactical, and support slot, and aside from finding and crafting weapons, you can also combine them.
  • All weapons have an associated rarity.
  • Instead of dying, players will be able to "opt to exfiltrate the undead combat zone via helicopter."
  • There will be free post-launch content, including maps.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
