Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War open beta starts today

By Heidi Nicholas,
The final beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War runs this weekend from October 17th to October 19th, with a mix of maps and playlists, as well as a reward for reaching Level 10.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

The beta includes a number of different modes, detailed in full on the game's site. Fireteam: Dirty Bomb is a 40 player mode, where ten teams of four collect uranium for the "Dirty Bombs" that can "wipe out parts of the map from play due to expanding radiation zones." VIP Escort is another new multiplayer mode in which a different player is made the VIP in each round, with your team scoring a win if the VIP makes it to the exfil sites within two and half minutes or if you manage to eliminate the other team. Combined Arms: Assault is for teams of up to 12v12. The map has one neutral objective, and capturing this activates the next. "Get kills and capture zones to build momentum, which in turn reduces the amount of time needed to capture the next zone." Combined Arms: Domination is still for 12v12, but you'll have access to Tanks, Gunboats, or similar vehicles.

Then there's Team Deathmatch, Domination, where two teams fight to keep hold of three locations, earning points for every few seconds you manage to control it, and Hardpoint, where two teams fight for control of the Hardpoint objective area. Lastly, Control makes a return from Black Ops 4, tasking two teams with controlling two objectives on the map.

Lastly, as James Mattone, lead writer at Activision, points out over on a recent Xbox Wire post, if you manage to reach Level 10 in the Beta, you will earn the Mutual Animosity Weapon Blueprint when Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th. The open beta ends on October 19th.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
