Marvel's Avengers' "State of the Game" update confirms delayed launch on Xbox Series X|S

By Heidi Nicholas,
The Marvel's Avengers developers have shared a State of the Game update, discussing areas of improvement and future content. The developers also announced the delay of the Kate Bishop Operation launch, and the Xbox Series X|S launch. On another note, players will soon be receiving a digital "Thank You bundle" as a sign of appreciation.

Over on the Square Enix site, Scot Amos, studio head at Crystal Dynamics, says, "Marvel’s Avengers’ launch was not without turbulence, and we recognize that a number of issues detracted from your enjoyment of the game. This does not align with Crystal Dynamics’ value of craftsmanship, and for that we sincerely apologize." Amos goes on to discuss the state of the game, but first announces that all players will be getting a digital thank-you bundle including 1,500 credits (enough for a legendary skin), 7,000 units, 250 upgrade modules, 20 DNA keys, and a Sarah Garza-inspired nameplate, all as a "sign of appreciation." These bundles will begin to roll out at 10am PDT / 6pm BST on October 22nd.

Amos says the team is working on more features driven by community feedback, including an Avengers Initiative Ping system, an option to replay the Reassemble Campaign with all of your gear and your level, a High Contrast Mode as an accessibility feature to improve readability, default or dynamic options for Hero Icon visibility, better clarity about mission rewards, and better indicators for offscreen and ranged enemy attacks. Amos continues, adding that there are four key areas of improvement for the game: performance and stability, multiplayer and matchmaking, rewards, and late-game content. This last was an issue, with recent player concerns about a lack of end-game content and a dwindling player count leading the Marvel's Avengers developers to promise more content.

On this note, Amos says that the next few weeks will introduce the Omega-Level Threat classification as "multiplayer-focused challenges that are tuned for high-end players and offer special late-game rewards." These Omega-Level Threats are "a first step towards even more exciting and challenging late-game content" and "represent our first step in escalating the challenge your Super Heroes face. As the Avengers Initiative narrative continues to unfold, the stakes will get higher and the challenges harder." The first of these threats will be the AIM Cloning Lab.

Kate Bishop

After that, the team plans to have "a fixed, predictable patching cycle to ensure all new content meets both our and your high standards and has time for extensive internal testing." On this note, the developers have delayed the Kate Bishop Operation launch out of October. "We’re sorry for this slight delay, but we are dedicated as a team to quality first," says Amos. After Kate will be Clint and in 2021 will come the "biggest Avengers Initiative addition yet" with a new Hero, region, and narrative arc.

Lastly, Amos confirmed that the game will now launch on Xbox Series X|S next year, "to ensure that we give our team the time to deliver a next-gen experience showcasing all that this game is meant to be," but that the next-gen upgrade will still be free. "In our nearly 30-year history, Crystal Dynamics has never shipped a game under conditions like these; from working at home to avoid a pandemic, to some of us evacuating said homes to stay safe from wildfires," concludes Amos. "While the challenges 2020 has surfaced are many, it’s also instilled a strength in us; to reassemble a team divided by geography and life circumstances, and come back stronger, united by a mission to do right by you. This is, in part, why we have taken our responsibility developing Marvel’s Avengers so seriously... Marvel’s Avengers is far more than a game to us, and you are far more than its players. You are our Super Heroes. We may be apart, but we are all in this together."
