NBA 2K21 adds unskippable adverts a month after launch

By Sean Carey,
According to several reports, unskippable adverts have been added to NBA 2K21 — a full-priced $60 game — a month after the basketball sim's launch.

According to Stevivor, and several other posts across various internet forums such as Reddit, players are coming across ads during loading screens on Xbox One, PS4, and PC versions of the game. The ad Stevivor came across was one for the Oculus Quest 2, which played before episode seven in MyTeam Season 2. We've embedded the video showing the ad above. As noted by VG247, unskippable ads featured in NBA 2K20 as well.

EA recently came under fire for including in-game adverts in UFC 4. Trailers for the Amazon TV show The Boys were shown before and at the end of in-game replays, but EA soon pulled the ads after receiving negative feedback from players who weren't expecting to see adverts in a full-priced game.

It's a shame to see ads in a $60 game such as NBA 2K21. It will be interesting to see if these ads appear in the $70 next-gen versions of NBA 2K21 considering the Xbox Series X and PS5's reduced loading times.

NBA 2K21 is available now on Xbox One and comes to Xbox Series X on November 10th. The next-gen Xbox Series X version includes better visuals, improved physics, new animations, and maybe in-game ads.
