Call of Duty: Warzone Haunting of Verdansk event introduces new Zombie Royale

By Sean Carey,
A new limited-time Halloween event is coming to both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and
Call of Duty: Warzone. The Haunting of Verdansk introduces a bunch of new additions such as Zombie Royale, a special nighttime only mode, and terrifying encounters with characters from the Saw and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchises.

The Haunting of Verdansk begins today (October 20th) and runs for two weeks, ending on November 3rd. Warzone players will be able to drop into Verdansk under cover of night for the first time with the new update. Nighttime infiltrations will only be available in select modes such as Trios. Activision recommends that while the full moon's glow does prevent total darkness, players will likely need thermal optics to spot other players lurking in darker areas. It also explains that players are in for a fright with encounters from a ventriloquist doll that appears on TV sets, a phantom chainsaw-wielding killer, and a ghost train "filled with souls of those who lost their lives fighting in the Gulag."

Zombie Royale is another limited-time game mode where the dead come back to life. Players who die in Warzone will no longer be sent to the Gulag. Instead, they'll come back to life as a Zombie with supernatural abilities such as increased speed, more powerful melee attacks, and thermal vision. Zombies cannot wield weapons. If you do end up turning into one of the undead, you can still respawn as an Operator. When an enemy player is killed, they'll drop a syringe. Picking up two of these syringes as a Zombie will parachute you back into Verdansk with your loadout.

Also in Warzone are new Trick or Treat Supply Boxes. These boxes might contain some unique cosmetics and weapon blueprints, or they might have something more frightening. Activision warns you to open these at your peril. Collecting all 16 individual rewards from these Supply Boxes will grant you the Pumpkin Pusher Legendary Assault Rifle blueprint.

Over in Modern Warfare, players' heads will turn into pumpkins if they're on a killstreak — which isn't just a cosmetic change. Activision says there are some spooky changes in game modes too, "expect scarecrows on Domination points instead of flags, skulls instead of dog tags in Kill Confirmed." Other additions include a Snipers Only mode and Onslaughter, which has Squads fighting over a Juggernaut suit that spawns on the map.

As is customary with any live-service game and events like this, there are some limited-time cosmetics to purchase too. Special Saw and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre themed cosmetic bundles will be available to buy.

The Haunting of Verdansk limited-time event kicks off today (October 20th) and runs until November 3rd.
