Gears 5 getting new story DLC in December, new achievements coming with Series X|S update

By Sean Carey,
In a recent interview with IGN, The Coalition revealed that Gears 5 will be getting its first story DLC expansion in December called Hivebusters.

Gears 5 escape mode

Speaking with IGN, Gears 5 principal lead producer Zoe Curnoe didn't give too much away about the DLC or what it will be about. "All I can say is December, and the title is Hivebusters, so it might give you a little hint as to what that content might contain," said Curnoe. Curnoe did reveal that the DLC will be optimised for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles and that it has an estimated playtime of three to four hours.

It's possible that this new Hivebusters DLC could relate to the Escape mode in Gears 5, instead of the main campaign. Keegan, Lahni, and Mac, who make up Team Scorpio, are the default squad that launched with the mode (several characters have been added post-launch). This strike team is tasked with sneaking into Swarm hives and destroying them from the inside. Although nothing has been confirmed, the DLC might focus on these three characters.

Nothing has been said about new achievements for the Hivebusters DLC, but knowing The Coalition, the expansion will likely include some new ones for players to get to grips with.

The Coalition has also detailed what we can expect from the Gears 5 Xbox Series X|S update, including a New Game+ option with new difficulty modes, new skins, achievements, and the option to play through the campaign as that WWE dude, Dave Bautista. When the update lands on November 10th, players will be able to swap out the legendary Marcus Fenix for Batista and complete the game's story as the actor and wrestler. Batista has even recorded a new voice over for his role in the campaign.

That's not all though, according to IGN, Gears 5 will be getting two new difficulty modes (Ironman and Inconceivable), new skins for Kait, Del, and JD, and mutators such as big head mode. Inconceivable mode is one level of difficulty higher than what's already included in Gears 5, while Ironman mode will require you to complete the game with only one life — you can bet there's going to be a new achievement tied to that. Of course, Gears 5 on Xbox Series X|S will be getting a bunch of visual upgrades, including 120fps in Versus mode.

The Coalition has confirmed that all content (apart from the visual upgrades) will be coming to all platforms.
