Apex Legends could become "more than just a battle royale," says game director

By Heidi Nicholas,
It's a good time for Apex Legends. A new season is on the way, bringing more fresh content with a new Legend and a new map, and now, game director Chad Grenier has discussed the possibilities that Apex Legends could become "more than just a battle royale."

Horizon Season 7

Speaking to Eurogamer, Grenier said that one focus with the team's goals for the game is "how do we expand it?" Grenier continued, adding, "so that means new players, new platforms, and it also means new ways to play Apex... Right now we're a battle royale game. I think if you look into the future, we have a lot of conversations of, you know, should we expand beyond battle royale? We have this roster of legends that people love - how else can we use them? I think looking into the future, you're probably going to see the game becoming more than just a battle royale game. You see we have all these LTMs (limited time modes) and other ways to play. I think that's a great starting point."

There are a few interesting things to pick apart here. Apex Legends frequently gets updated with new Legends, as has just happened with Season 7 and Horizon, and while they serve to add some fresh gameplay, EA and Respawn also put a great deal of focus into their personalities and backstories. Horizon, for instance, had a four-minute Stories from the Outlands video about her mission in space and her determination to return to her son. From Grenier's comments, it seems all this extensive info could come into play in the game's future. Likewise, Grenier describes the "other ways to play" Apex, like the limited time modes, as a "great starting point" for the game's future direction.

How do you think Apex Legends should evolve? Do you think it could be improved by expanding beyond battle royale, or should it carry on as it is? Let us know in the comments!
