Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition's update adds battle royale for up to eight players

By Heidi Nicholas,
Battle royale has arrived in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (Win 10). Up to eight players can fight it out on five new maps with the new battle royale game mode, available now as part of the game's anniversary update.

The battle royale mode starts you out with just two hero units, who you then need to send out scouting for supply and military buildings. Resources will accumulate faster if you have control of a supply building, but if other players are close and manage to take out your defences, you'll lose control of those valuable supplies. The mode is designed for enormous armies and fast-paced, chaotic combat. Over on an Xbox Wire post, Ian Stevens, senior program manager at World’s Edge, says it's a good idea to "acquire multiple military buildings to spam units and bring massive armies into the battlefield." Just to ensure everything is as chaotic as possible, the map will continue to shrink, taking away resources and pushing you into the centre.

The anniversary update brings a few other new features, such as Quick Play, which lets you "quickly set game type and map preferences, and effortlessly matchmake with others in Random Map, Empire Wars, and Battle Royale game modes." Stevens adds that "the queue for Quick Play is unranked and meant for convenient play with just a few clicks." You will also find new Civ info on the Civ Selection UI to help you choose your play style, and Hints & Tips have been added to the loading screens to better help new players. With that idea in mind, the main menu UI has been changed to simplify things.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition (Win 10) is available with Xbox Game Pass for PC.
