Xbox game streaming app could be coming to smart TVs in 2021, Phil Spencer says

With xCloud game streaming slowly rolling out across the world to mobile devices, it makes sense for Microsoft to bring the service to smart TVs via an app, and according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, this could be happening within the next 12 months.

When asked about developing an Xbox app for smart TVs, Spencer told The Verge, "I think you’re going to see that in the next 12 months. I don’t think anything is going to stop us from doing that." In a previous interview, Spencer hinted that xCloud game streaming could be coming to TVs via a streaming stick or "lower-priced hardware."

The future is looking bright for xCloud. We know Microsoft is hard at work in trying to bring the service to iOS devices via a browser-based workaround, which Spencer says is coming in early 2021. It's also looking promising that xCloud could be coming to Windows 10 PCs after reports from earlier in the year suggested Microsoft employees were testing a new Windows 10 xCloud app. Windows Central recently managed to get hands-on with the PC app. Having xCloud game streaming on iOS, TVs, and Windows PCs would definitely bring more people in the Xbox ecosystem.

Although Microsoft looks to be going all out with xCloud, Spencer said the company won't be abandoning traditional consoles or hardware. "I don’t think these will be the last big pieces of hardware that we ship. When we think about xCloud, which is our version of Stadia or Luna, I think what it needs to evolve to are games that actually run between a hybrid environment of the cloud and the local compute capability. It’s really a hybrid between both of those."
