TrueAchievements Game of the Year 2020 analysis

By Luke Albigés,
Following last week's TA Game of the Year 2020 results, we received a lot of feedback that you'd be keen to see us take a slightly deeper dive into the data. Because we're nice, here is that extended breakdown, including the full top 100 list and a bunch of alternate top tens based on slightly different criteria to what was used in creating the actual list. Enjoy!

TA GOTY 2020

The top 100 in full

Many of you were asking about where certain games fell outside of the top ten we shared last week. To save us trawling through comments and replying to each query individually, we thought it best to give you the entire top 100. Almost 500 games were in the running, but since those outside the top 100 struggled to hit double digit vote counts, that seemed like a fair cut-off point. Eagle-eyed readers may also notice a change in the top ten — the PC version of Yakuza 0 received just six votes and flew completely under our radar, but that little boost for the game turned out to be just enough to bump Cold War out of the top ten.

Top ten excluding Game Pass

While it wouldn't really be fair to disqualify a game simply because it's available with Game Pass, a few of you were asking how the chart would look if that were the case. So here it is.
  1. Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  2. Cyberpunk 2077
  3. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  5. Resident Evil 3
  6. Mafia: Definitive Edition
  7. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered
  9. Watch Dogs: Legion
  10. Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Top ten by vote count

We asked you for an ordered top five in your voting, and weighted higher spots more heavily in calculating the overall rankings. But what if we instead just counted every vote as a single point, regardless of order? Surprisingly, not an awful lot would change — Minecraft Dungeons would jump two spots to fifth place (as mentioned previously, the game picked up a bunch of low-end votes), with Resident Evil 3 sneaking up into tenth place, but that's it. The rest of the top ten would be unchanged.
  1. Doom Eternal
  2. Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  3. Cyberpunk 2077
  4. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  5. Minecraft Dungeons
  6. Gears Tactics
  7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2
  8. Tell Me Why
  9. Carrion
  10. Resident Evil 3

Top ten by first choice votes only

We mentioned before that Cyberpunk 2077 picked up most first choice nominations, so how does the data look if we only counted those number one picks? Again, not much more than a reshuffle really, with the big winner (aside from Cyberpunk, obviously) being Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which soars up to 8th place from 15th on the main list. We'd also see a three-way tie for the last spot in the top ten, and this is the one alternate metric presented here that allows Dragon Quest to make the top ten.
  1. Cyberpunk 2077
  2. Assassin's Creed Valhalla
  3. DOOM Eternal
  4. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  5. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2
  6. Gears Tactics
  7. Yakuza 0
  8. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  9. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  10. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition/Minecraft Dungeons/Resident Evil 3

Top ten by score per 1,000 tracked TA players (filtered)

You might recall that in the previous article, we mentioned how Yakuza: Like a Dragon achieved the best ratio of points scored to tracked players on TA. This comes with the caveat that we only factored in games with at least 1,000 tracked players there, since extremely low players bases could massively skew the results. Here are the other top performers based on the same criteria — Valhalla and Doom would still make the top ten, and WRC 9 flies up from outside the top 100 to make the top cut.
  1. Yakuza: Like a Dragon (66.5)
  2. Nexomon: Extinction (44.5)
  3. Crusader Kings III (43.4)
  4. Katamari Damacy Reroll (40.4)
  5. A Plague Tale: Innocence (31)
  6. Football Manager 2021(28)
  7. WRC 9 (27.1)
  8. Assassin's Creed Valhalla (23.6)
  9. Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (23.6)
  10. Doom Eternal (22.9)

Top ten by score per 1,000 tracked TA players (unfiltered)

But you know what? Skewed results can be fun too, so let's ditch the minimum player base and see what happens. First up, the world implodes when we attempt to divide by zero — My Universe: Fashion Boutique picked up just one vote but since there isn't a single tracked owner on TA, it screams into first place by completely breaking mathematics. Sayonara Wild Hearts is the only game among these with over 100 tracked players and since we know you're curious, it was the German version of Let's Sing, which was the only version to receive any votes.
  1. My Universe: Fashion Boutique (undefined)
  2. The Otterman Empire (285.7)
  3. Injection Pi23 'No Name, No Number' (161.3)
  4. Mystery Mine (142.9)
  5. Colossus Down (108.1)
  6. Let's Sing 2021 (97.6)
  7. Lair of the Clockwork God (96.8)
  8. Handball 21 (90.9)
  9. Sayonara Wild Hearts (88.1)
  10. Slide Stars (76.9)

This went down really well last time and totally wasn't just an excuse to dunk on Avengers, so let's go again!
  • The highest placed game with less than 100 total votes was Immortals Fenyx Rising, which managed to make it to 25th place on account of over a third of all votes for Ubisoft's brilliant open world adventure being first choice picks.
  • Further down the pecking order, the highest placed game with less than ten total votes was the Windows 10 version of Fallout 76, way down in 122nd place.
  • Somebody actually voted for Fast & Furious Crossroads, presumably by mistake.
  • 22 of the top 100 games were remakes or remasters, with original release dates spanning two full decades from 1993 (Day of the Tentacle) to 2012 (Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning). None of these were called Doom Eternal.
  • Inside the top 100, only one game — Yakuza: Like a Dragon — had first choice picks account for more than half of all votes for it.
  • The top 100 was only breached by two games with less than 1,000 tracked players on TA, Sayonara Wild Hearts and Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition. At the other end of the scale, Minecraft Dungeons was the 2020 release with the highest TA player count, with over 170,000 tracked players, which explains its surprisingly strong performance.
  • Publishing giant EA only managed to get one game in the top 50Star Wars: Squadrons came in 34th place, 30-odd spots above EA's next-best performer, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered.
  • The oldest game to receive any votes was AO Tennis 2, which released on January 9th 2020 and just scraped into the top 300 thanks to a single first choice pick.
Had your fill of data now? Good stuff. Let us know in the comments how your favourites did, now that you've got that full top 100 to pore over...
